I've got a couple .223 ARs, a .22 AR and am building an SBR .300BO AR. Was thinking about building a crazy accurate "long range" AR. So, assuming you did all things right, match grade barrel, aftermarket trigger, free float hand guard, what is the most ideal "LR" bullet to shoot? I was thinking I'd like to sling some heavier bullets, like the 69-77gr. I've really never ventured away from the 55gr FMJ in my other two. I noticed that in the heaviers several people make "match grade" ammo. Also, I was thinking the heavier bullet would lend itself better to knocking down game animals than the 55gr. So, what barrel length and twist rate for a LR acurized AR? And all things ideal, just what is the range capability of an AR like this?

The heavier bullets like the 75gr hornady BTHP shoot great and have a better BC than the 55gr stuff so it will buck wind better. I've never shot a 223/5.56 for groups so I can't tell you the limits of it, but Jason and I were hitting steel at 300 yards with my 10.5" SBR with Aimpoint T1 on it with 62gr green tip bulk ammo. That was with a rainier match barrel and stock trigger with JP springs so nothing special about it.

Are you wanting to keep it 223/5.56, or open for other caliber options? If open for options, a 6.5 Grendel is hard to beat. If you keep it 223, then yes, the heavy .224" bullets like the 75-80 grain bullets are best. With the right ammo and shooter, out to 800 yards is very doable with the heavy bullets. I've shot some of my 68 grain BTHP bullets out to 800 with a 1-4 Burris XTR. The 4x is a little challenging, but doable. Totally depends on your set up. Good ammo is key.

I was just about to say if you aren't stuck on the 223 look at the 6.5 Grendel still 223 platform it better long range round. Also make sure the heavier bullets once seated aren't over the COAL of the mag. The 75gr AMax don't fit in a AR15 mag when seated correctly but the 75gr BTHP will.

So educate me, cause I am clueless......let's say you have a complete AR15 in .223, what has to be changed to turn it into a 6.5G. I know barrel, but what about magazines, BCG, buffer, etc? And this is assuming that standard .223 AR15 upper and lowers work for a 6.5.

I know they make 6.5 mags that have a different follower in them because of feed problems in a standard mag.

If you reload this might be of interest. Look at the 22 DTi which is a 6.8SPC necked to 22 caliber made by Mike Milli of Dedicated Technology. It can run the 75gr AMax in a AR15 from a standard 6.8 magazine and should push that bullet at 3150fps maybe more depending on barrel length.
