I would love to see a December 1 start with the split closed first week in January and close the end of February. This would allow us to take advantage of the greatest migration weather and still promote hunting. Remember that hunting dollars fund waterfowl management. You could even drop the daily bag limit to 5 birds. I'm not killing limits these days anyway.

Wood Duck is on to something. I would be happy with that as we'll.

I love seeing threads like these....just shows who understands how seasons are set.
Do any of you know why season ends at the end of January? Do any of you think Texas sets the end of season for the last weekend in January?
Really curious to hear answers to the above.

I corresponded with a guy with TP&W about this exact thing. He told me that ducks start paring up for spring the first part of Feb. If the season went further than the end of Jan. duck production would fall off dramatically. It could be B.S. I work on supermarket refrigeration so I have to take his word for it. The ducks I see when I work are wrapped in plastic and frozen.
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

The USFW services set FEDERAL guidelines that all states have to stay within. The USFW says the exact same thing that Barney Topwater said...they feel that duck production would drop off dramatically if season went past end of January.
So, for those of you who complain about the season to TPWD, it will do no good. The states do the best they can within the FEDERAL frameworks. In the case of Texas, they start with the latestdate season can end and work backwards until the max number of days the Central Flyway is allowed.
Starting the season later would not allow us to extend the season later since the Feds say season has to end in late January. All starting the season later would do is chop off days that we are allowed to hunt in the Central Flyway.

Interesting, I had no idea why they closed duck season in Oklahoma while goose was still going but the pairing up could explain it. Last year had ducks pouring into our goose spreads after the close of duck season. Normal for us to kill limits in goose spread so it's brutal to watch them come in and not be able to shoot.

Well tell us River Runner, as you know the answers....... And for those that say ducks start pairing up in February...... I've seen drakes chasing others off in November, but that was at a park, so I don't know anything I love seeing threads like these....just shows who understands how seasons are set.

I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

Already answered in my above post. The Feds set the seasons because of pair bonding and they feel that production would be dramatically reduced. Now, I don't believe in this myself as I, too, see Mallards paired up as early as November. Saw a lot of Mallards paired up already this year. I just get a kick out of people that think the state of Texas can simply move the seasons back. It is not the states or the Central Flyway council...it is the USFWS (Feds) that set the frameworks that the states have to work within.

Some realize and know this, however it wasn't the OPs question. It was should the season be adjusted. I know, dates are set early-mid year. Only one person mentioned anything about the State, AFTER your 1st post...... I just get a kick out of people that think the state of Texas can simply move the seasons back. It is not the states or the Central Flyway council...it is the USFWS (Feds) that set the frameworks that the states have to work within.
