Scouted two ponds this morning each had about 25-30 ducks. I'll be hunting one of these two Wednesday morning.
Pond #1 - about 90x60 yards. It had 5 canvasback drakes, GWT, Wigeon and Gadwall. The cons are that I can only hunt it facing east or south on the N or NW bank. Last time I hunted it I barely got my limit because they want to land on opposite bank just out of range where I can't set up. I did have a bad wind that day and should have a NW wind Wednesday.
Pond #2 - about 50x30 yards. Also holding about 30 birds but all Wigeon and Gadwall. There is a lot more cover and would make for easier shots. I could probably limit pretty easy but no Canvasbacks.
The ponds are only about 300-400 yards apart and usually hunting one doesn't cause the birds to leave the other one.

I'd hunt pond 1 on the NW side with a NW wind. maybe the N side with NW wind if the shot is close enough. I always like ducks looking to the side of me rather than straight on.
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

BIG question: Are the ducks staying there overnight or arriving to feed/loaf in the morning?
If you bust them off of the small pond setting up in the dark they're probably not coming back until later on that afternoon. The bigger pond is going to be okay because they can probably avoid you, but a 50x30 yard pond is a bust if they hear you setting up.
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

I will take curtain #2.
I face the same type wind issue on our lease and the ducks landing on the other side drives me absolutely crazy. Once the first group lands, the rest will surely follow.

I guess it depends on how bad you want canvasbacks. If it were me, I'd be after the cans, but that's just because I've never killed one myself. Anything else, I'll always hunt where I can play the wind. If I can't do that, then I'll look for another place to hunt. I absolutely hate to hunt ducks backwards.

I'd shoot 5 greys and wigeon on pond 2 then jump pond 1 for my can drake.

I'd shoot 5 greys and wigeon on pond 2 then jump pond 1 for my can drake. Just stand on the bank of pond 1. The can will eventually give you a shot. They are some dumb azz birds.

I'd hunt pond 2, but I'm not after a can.
I like the get your 5 and move plan for the can.
