There's also the grand-scale factor of population:hunt-able land. As populations increase there is less and less land to hunt.

Pretty sure hunter ratios to general population are and have been declining for years. Some years license sales have increased but that can be misleading because 1)many have come after periods of decline and 2)participation has certainly not kept pace with overall population growth.

But that also has to do with demographics of the population.

Number of licensed hunters has remained somewhat steady over the years but has declined. With 16,420,249 licensed hunters in 1974 with a population in the US of 213,900,000 as compared to 14,631,327 hunters in 2013 with a population of 316,150,320. License sales have decreased by less than 2 million but the population has grown by over 100 million.

Yes but the majority of the people having babies were non hunters to start with. Large urban families have never been the main demographic when it comes to hunting.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Have to consider on whole US the decline in tags from declining animal populations out west.

Technically, hunting is dying. Less participation coupled with increased urbanization tells the tale. Will it ever really die? Not anytime soon because of the fervor/deep-seated commitment of the hunting community.

But the numbers show why I am always so cognizant of non-hunters. It is a naive game to think we can simply ignore them.

Trophy, I'm having trouble understanding what you are trying to say. First, you say that hunting is not dying, there are plenty of new hunters. Then, you talk about demographics and non-hunters having babies. En, where are the new hunters coming from? Only being born to people that are already hunters? I think the overall data is pretty clear. The overall hunters are remaining pretty steady, and the percentage of hunters as a population has dropped dramatically. Back to the original topic, the current marketing environment is embarrassing to me.

Population growth was brought up because of urban sprawl. More people being born creates a demand for space.

But hunting is not dying. It's as popular now as it ever was, perhaps more so due to shows like duck dynasty and chasing tail.

Not so much urban sprawl in the sense of it taking away hunting space, but those born & raised on concrete are less likely to hunt and that's where people are moving to bc that's where the $ is. In Podunkville, not hunting is considered blasphemy.
