I've been looking to get my FIL something for Christmas. He has a N550 scope but the battery life sucks. I don't want to buy the $130 battery pack and I don't think he would like to cary around a big battery. I found a small 12v 4500mAh Lithium rechargeable battery pack on Amazon for $22. It seems perfect. Here's a picture of it. I don't know much about the sizes of plugs. The battery pack has a 5.5x2.1mm male plug. What female plug does the N550 have? Thanks.

Turns out the N550 and N750 use that plug. This seems to be the same thing pulsar sells for over $100 cheaper.
Am I missing something. Will this work?

First, the Puslar is a 12v scope. Second, I don't know if they regulate the amperage of their battery pack lower than what is offered by the Amazon battery pack.
Basically, my guess is that you will overpower the unit and burn it out.

It will work. Plug is right. Here's the catch...it's a 4500 mah battery and that is why it is so cheap. You need to look for at least a 6800 mah battery. Catch number 2...not all batteries are created equally. All of these are made in China and quite often the rating is higher than the actual capacity. Sometimes, a 4500 rating is actually 2500. This is important as it determines just how long the scope will run. A true 2500 mah won't buy you much, if anything, over the AA's he is using. Being on Amazon, you have no idea where in China it was purchased. There are quality batteries out of China, but you have to know who you are dealing with. Hope this helps.

Basically, my guess is that you will overpower the unit and burn it out. The amperage will be fine. Lots of people use a 12v feeder battery with their own creation. It will work. Plug is right. You are right about it being China made and them lying about their amps. There is a 6800mAh one for $50 also. I might go with that one. Looks better built too and it has a USB output also to charge his phone that's always dieing. Thanks for the help. I'll let talk know how it goes.

After more research their battery pack has an output of 11.1v. Found a picture of the pulsar battery pack and zoomed in and it says output 11.1v. I will have to look for a different battery pack. 12.6v is too much. Makes it flicker and could fry it.

Well, turns out 11.1v battery's are everywhere, used in rc cars and planes. But they are more expensive. After getting a good battery $70. charger $12. plugs and wire. free. And soldering and making everything. I think it will cost too much ish. and could have issues like most things I make.
Darn.

You've had one like the one in the picture above?
How many mAh is yours and how long does it last?
I've read so many different things about diy batteries. I've read that 12v is too much and it made a guy's scope flicker. I've read people use 12v feeder batteries and it works fine. I just don't want to ruin his scope. He trusts me to find diy cheap things for hunting and I don't want to ruin that trust.

I have used both 6800 & 9800 mah batteries with no issues. It seems like I remember the specs on that scope being up to 14 volts. I strongly suspect that the flickering was not due to the use of a 12 volt battery. I don't remember the run times, but it seems like it was something on the order of 15 hours.

I ordered the one in the picture. Works perfectly. I will find a way to mount it to the gun and we will be set. Maybe taped to the butt stock? Or some kind of tube sock over the stock with it in it?
Any ideas?

Use Velcro to attach it to the buttstock, that's how I did with my Pulsar battery pack. The Pulsar comes with a nylon pouch, if you can fabricate something like that and attach Velcro to it, you can attach to the stock. I added a long length of Velcro from Walmart to go around it a couple of times.
