Came home for the holidays and booked a hunt this morning and tomorrow with Chris Shindledecker. It was my brother in law's first time hunting and I told him if we were lucky we'd shoot some pintails, but we'd for sure be on the redheads.

Chris took us to a great little spot out in the Laguna Madre and within 10 minutes of shooting time we had a few pintails down. It was a real bluebird morning early on and things went dead as the sun came up. We had a couple mottled ducks land outside of the decoys and as I heard them quacking I figured on a slow morning like this I'd get out the ole mallard hen call and try and call them in. I quacked back and forth with them for awhile but they found a real duck to talk to and swam off. I kept quacking from time to time just to kill the boredom and sure enough about 10 minutes later here comes a duck swimming over to our decoys like he's interested in the quack.

He made it into the decoys before Chris and I both realized it was a mallard. I think I went into a bit of shock at seeing a mallard drake in the Laguna Madre, but my brother in law didn't know to be shocked and as soon as that mallard started to take off he smoked him. Gotta say it's a first for me seeing, let alone having one of the guys in my group kill, a mallard on the laguna. Even got to finish off the day with a few more pintails, a redhead, and a GWT. Definitely not the hunt I was expecting on a 70 degree bluebird day in Corpus.

Pic for proof:
