Wondering if I should be using my 7.62 FMJ milsurp for hogs rather than buying expensive 308 hunting rounds.

Anyone have experience with both?

dueling with android, logged in making a post, next second gotta log-in again. tis a conspiracy i tell ya . been having luck with .223 55gr fmj heart lung shots, close quarters though. it just got a punkcher wound, most blood fills up in body cavity. if no respondents here try the ammo section. best wishes flag

I do. I stopped using FMJ when the landowner requested I not use FMJ at his place.

I killed several hogs with surplus FMJ and commercial FMJ. You can kill with FMJ just fine. It helps if you hit CNS structures to drop a hog immediately. I switched over to rounds with Nosler Accubond bullets. The exit wounds tended to be much larger with the hunting ammo.

I said this in another thread, but unless you are one of the few people hunting off your back porch, chances are that the cost of ammo for you shooting hogs is pretty inconsequential to all your other hunting-related expenses. I had a bunch of surplus that cost me about 35 cents a round and my hunting ammo cost a bit more at $1.25 per round. I shot over 30 hogs last year with my .308. Over the course of the year, $37.50 versus $10.50 over 9 months really isn't an issue. There are a few additional rounds for zeroing, but still, it still isn't that big of a deal.

DNS has it pegged. Shoot what runs right in your weapon...the ammo cost is really inconsequential...

Its not the cost but I do have about 5-600 rounds of 7.62 FMJ already that I have been using for plinking. I will try both this year and see what (if any) difference I can tell on hogs. I am not too impressed with 308 Fed premium 150G Vital Shok for $1 a round.

Make some "Bubba HP rounds" ? By touching tip of each round on a sand belt to make them "hollow point"
bolt peep

Anyway, fmj should work just fine. Make sure of what is behind the piggy as fmj will go thru and travel some more.
