Getting some .223 ready for next weekend and got to thinking...

How many folks lube the inside of their case necks when sizing?

I always have. (Only been reloading about 5 years)

I got to wondering if this was another one of those Crimp / Don't Crimp arguments.

I like the Hornady Unique Case Lube. I use a Q-Tip and swab/swirl the inside of the neck.

Have FL sized thousands upon thousands of pieces of rifle brass and have never once lubed the inside of the neck. I use the same case lube as you by the way.

If it would make you feel better, and if you have a bench grinder, you can polish the expander ball. Cotton buffing wheel and some polishing compound. It'll make the steel shine like chrome. Slick as a VS model's azz.

I also use a Q-tip, but only lube about every third or fourth case to keep the expander ball lubed just a little. If it gets too dry or dirty, it will stretch the neck and shoulder upon exit.

I do have a bench mounted cotton buffing wheel & compound.
Got it a couple of weeks ago to bring an RCBS Uniflow Measurer with both metering barrels back to life that was given to me.
Everything had patina :-(
Cotton wheel did wonders.

Thank you for the great suggestion!!!

Always lube the inside of the case mouths, tried it years ago with the 7mm-08 and got one more loading before trimming than without the lube, so figure it lessens case trimming and extends case life with less stretching. YMMV

Okay... I polished it up.

Would you mind swinging by with a VS Model or two so I can do a proper comparison?

I use a lanolin alcohol spray that I mix up. I spray from two angles and some gets in the case mouths.

I prefer if I have the time to use the lanolin spray and let them dry. But if I'm in the middle of a run and the cases start to "drag" over the ball I have some locksmiths graphite on hand. Dip the case mouth in that and it's like...you get the idea.

I use 99% alcohol so it dries quickly and leaves the lanolin behind. No waiting.

I use unique and run just a minuscule amount on the neck when lubing the cases.

always have, expander ball slides out much easier lessens the chance of unsizing the case you just resized. i use imperial sizing wax best stuff there is bar none, one can would prolly last me my life time. stuff is slicker than snot on a doorknob smeared with greased owl dung

I use hornady one shot spray lube for everything that isn't military brass. It's not slick enough for military brass for me. But it lubes up everything in a hurry.

Yup...when resizing I lube the case necks. Started doing this when I saw some
damage (stretch) on the brass necks.

I used to do it, quit, and restarted very lightly lubing when I permanently stuck a case in a die.

I spray the case mouths, necks and bodies all in one circular pass with Hornady One Shot.

If you do stick a case in a die and rip off the rim, all is not lost. Use a 1/4"x20 tap to cut threads into the base of the stuck case after drilling out the primer hole with the appropriate drill bit. Then find a nut for a half-inch bolt. The inside diameter of the 1/2" nut is bigger than the base of the case (usually) and smaller than the base of the FL die (depending on the cartridge that's stuck, you may need to get creative in scrounging the right size nut, but 1/2" will usually work).

Next, get a 1/4"x20 bolt of say 2-3" long. Then thread a 1/4" nut on the bolt, followed by a 1/4" fender washer, followed by your 1/2" nut from above. Now thread the contraption into the bottom of the stuck case that you've previously tapped. Using two crescent wrenches, hold the 1/4" bolt head with one wrench while you advance the 1/4 nut with the other. The 1/2" nut will serve as a deadman and allow you to extract the case with no damage to the die.

This task will take 30-60 minutes and will fill you with a resolve to properly lube your cases in the future. It sure did for me.

dawaba, I'm going to read that about 15 times until I really understand it. Then I expect I'll try it. I haven't ripped off the rim. It's still attached. I have noting to lose.

I have done something very similar but just attached a slide hammer to the 1/4" bolt. After a tap or two bolt and case come right out.

Or you could go to Cabelas and get a RCBS stuck case remover that comes with the above mentioned materials about 20.00
