Just did some research and it appears to be very difficult to measure headspacing on it with that dang rounded shoulder. A friend of mine has a beautiful Weatherby rifle chambered in 7 Weatherby Mag, he is considering rebarreling with a tighter twist to run 180's. I originally told him that we could rechamber it in 7 Weatherby since he has brass and dies, and that I could make it shoot. But I want a .003" bump on the shoulders and that rounded shoulder is tough to measure and set the FL die for a .003" bump. I'm tempted to tell him lets rechamber the new barrel for 7 Rem Mag to get a straight shoulder. bang

That's a perfect illustration of why measurements are useless. Go by feel and you won't go wrong.

How much brass does he have? 7mm weatherby isn't as common as some others. I'd sell and build unless it has sentimental value then rebarrel to one of the big 7's.

Is there some way to get your .003" measurement from the bottom of the sizing die?

I can't imagine why anyone would want to shoot 180 grain bullets in a 7mm, anyway, or why it would be so important as to lead to a rebarrel, but whatever floats his boat, I guess.

one way to get close pretty close is converting your TPI to degree:

Resize case till the bolt will just close and then bump back the following additional to get 0.003"

Your dies are 24TPI
1.0"/24= 0.042 per 360deg
0.042/0.003=14
360/14= 25.714 degrees get you 0.003"

Turn your dies down additional 26 Degrees

popcorn

Or use depth mic/caliper if you have a flat surface on press to measure off of.

Because it is a Scud missile and is bad to the bone. I told him that's the bullet I will be loading for it. Same as what I out in my 7 Rem Mag.

Also feeler gauges between shell holder face and die body might work if you have clearance. Good luck.

What twist does he have on that barrel? I hope it's a 9...

Does wilson make an adjustable hs gauge for 7WM? that's one way to do it.

EDTI: yes -- http://www.midwayusa.com/product/500762/...eatherby-magnum

set the collar have the bottom of the case even with the max step then use A caliper and the distance with the min step (.005 iirc) to set your bump

We will order a 1:9" or 1:8.5" like mine.

I read an article where Hornady makes a blank gauage and you bore it out yourself. If they still make that, I have a lathe...

Just use the wilson, set it so a fired case = max step, the use the distance to the max step to set your shoulder as you screw the FL die in. That is an exactly check to use in conjunction with the math listed above as you screw it down. This will be very precise

This is the gauge to use (it HAS to be the adjustable model)

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/500762/...eatherby-magnum

It is adjustable, in that there is a collar that is floating to contact the datum line of the shoulder.

Loosen the hex screws, set a fired case on a VERY flat (bottom of a lapped plane, pane of glass, etc) and set the gauge over it. Tap the gauge and collar down so they are up against the case and the flat surface. Tighten the hex screws down.

Flip the gauge over and check that the case is perfectly flat against the bottom of the case.

Now your gauge is set from bottom of case (case head really, but I like to specify its the bottom surface of it) the datum line to the chamber of the rifle.

There is about .005 between the min and max steps on these gauges (iirc).

Use the bottom of the caliper to gauge the datum line to bottom of the case measurement as you VERY SLOWLY work the FL die down.

you should be able to measure to less than .001 if you do this properly.

does that explain it well?

This might help? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i8SeuYsUFY

I watched the video
I'm smellin your chickens now. That tool will be exactly what I need to produce brass that is .003" shorter than the chamber of the 7 Weatherby.

Thank you so much!
