Got a text from friend who has place near Hebbonville and said they are finding 60 to 70 coveys a day. Sounds like quail back in that part of texas

We had trouble keeping up with around a dozen coveys yesterday. How do you count 70 coveys a day?

Maybe if you are driving them up, driving 30 yards away and waylaying them, then back in the jeep to drive up the next covey?

I remember a 25 covey day back in 2005 that caused us to stay in he field later then was our normal day (the dogs did dig up a single or two). Between shooting, finding down birds and a coke or two we hunted till almost too dark to be hunting. On a 65 covey day we would have been out there all night. wink

I don't know how its possible, but back in the day, I was told by a lady who had been cooking for a hunting camp in deep south Texas, that 90+ coveys had been found one day a few days before our conversation.

Now, as was opined above, there may have been more than one truck running out of that camp. I personally don't know how one party could work that many, but wouldn't it be great to see such a thing, or be able to try?

One thing is for sure, the quail are a lot more plentiful down here this year than they have been the past three or four, and the Hebbronville area, on a good year, is quail central!

I just got a first hand report from the Jones Ranch. Paul S. found 16 coveys today, 15 of them pointed, all by young dogs.

Thanks for the report, Bill. I was hoping you could come forth with a story or something.

Haven't been over that way yet this season, but it will come. I can't wait to try it on!

My best trip over there last year netted 10 coveys by noon. That said, we were beating the brush hard for them. The day before, found seven coveys all day long...looking in more open areas.

Had an epic quail hunt in 2005 where we were speculating on day 1 on how many coveys each of the two groups bumped, so me and my partner kept track on day 2. There was no need to chase singles because dogs would point a covey of 50 blues that you thought were bobs because they held so good, then you keep going straight and they would point a covey of bobs before they got to the singles. Somebody is going to post this is is BS/post no good without pictures, so I will dig up the mid-day lunch pile pic tonight. 40+ coveys in a day (if you can run up 7 or 8 in the road and just drop a dog on them) is possible in the western rolling plains if you have a mule, long legs, the cover is just right, and there is a covey every 30 acres - been there, done that, got the pics, and shoulda had a t shirt made knowing that was the pinnacle smile

Have been told stories like DWQ just told several times by folks I believe completely. The story I told above (25 covey day) was hunted on foot and I truly believe if we'd have been using a mule on that hunt our covey count would have been much higher. Bring back the good old days. cheers
