Have a lease wth five small dirt tanks. Have been seeing ten to fifty ducks on each. If you set up on a tank before day light can you decoy the ducks in? Or do you have to wait until shooting hours and jump shoot each tank?

You bet you can decoy them.

But I wouldn't unless it had at least 20-30 on it. Anything less, it might be better to jump shoot.

There's few things more fun than getting ducks to decoy. I hunt one of two tanks on my place and decoy ducks into decoys when possible. If they land on the other tank and I'm not getting any more takers then I'll stroll to the other tank and give them a shot.

I like to set up on tanks that you cant jump and hunt them first. You betcha they will decoy! Then, if you still have a few birds to kill, you can go around and jump tanks.

I hunt a few small tanks and usually only put out 3-4 decoys. I've never put out a bigger spread. Might not hurt!

If those tanks have not been hunted, as long as you are still and covered up they won't know what hit them. Do not overdue the decoys since they already want to be there. Try to find the tank you think would be the most successful and try to duplicate the spread the way it was when you scouted. Make sure the wind is at your back and do not put the decoys to close where you are hunting from.

If it's a small tank with no cover, get on the downwind side to set up and put your decs on the upwind side. This way the birds are not looking at you when They approach. It's the opposite of the norm but works great. We are doing it sat.

I'll put out 6 or so decoys. They don't really matter until later in the morning. Ducks coming in early are coming in regardless but I've noticed later in the morning they are more likely to make a few circles over head before committing. Plus they are expecting ducks to be on the water and you've kept everything off the water.

I don't like tank jumping. The best thing about duck hunting is hearing them and watching them come in.

I would not jump shoot them, get there early, shoot them in the face comming in. If you are lucky, they come in pairs, you can shoot first 6 that come in, you get out of there and the 9 others get there and stay, and you can shoot them the next day. Jump them, you will be lucky to get 3, the other 12 will fly off probably never to return again.
