For those that have used them, how loud are these? Are they quieter than a pellet gun? My friend has a new house on the edge of town with just a few around him, and every night between 5-30 jack rabbits terrorize his yard. A cop lives across the street in one of the only other homes and he's pretty much said have at it. I have a 10/22 (yes, I know they won't cycle well/at all) that is deadly accurate and was wondering about taking some of them out. Thoughts?

Mainly depends on your barrel length, and of course which subs.
24" barrel with CB-Longs will be as loud as a daisy red-ryder bb gun.
CB-Long in a 16" barrel carbine will be as loud as a powerful springer pellet gun.
What is your barrel length?

Also, Aguila Super Colibri's will be really quiet in any barrel-length rifle, but you've got to be within about 10 yards to be effective on rabbits. Plus, all these subs will ricochet like crazy, so have to be extremely careful on background, etc.

I don't really think subsonic long rifles will be much quieter at all. You need to find some CB shorts or something. There are several quiet 22 ammo offerings out there that are very quiet, quieter than pellet rifles. I believe it is a 29 grain bullet at 725 or 925 fps or something like that. Regular subsonic is going to be loud.

If making head shots they will stretch a tad further. Shot a squirrel out my back door at 48 yards the other day and found pellet lumped under skin on the off side. Shot placement is critical.

CCI .22 CB shorts. But I can't find them anywhere. And you're gonnna need a bolt or single shot.

They're pretty dang quiet, actually. Most people don't realize it because it's hard to tell from behind the rifle. Step off to the side while someone else shoots to get a better idea. They may or may not be ideal for your situation, but they aren't that loud in a rifle. A pistol is a bit different.

And I've never had issues cycling the Remington subsonics in a 10/22. They worked great.

I'll have to try that. I used one to shoot a possum in my back yard, and from behind the rifle it was louder than I wanted it to be.

My perception is that the cci .22 cb shorts are quieter than mr rws 52 and 460 .177 springers.

I shot a squirrel in the backyard, once. It sounded pretty bad. I just hid in the house for awhile. I think it had to do a lot with it echoing off the privacy fence, though, because I know they're quiter than that. I didn't do that, anymore, just the same.

me too. And in my ruger 10-22 they will feed. You can load them in the clip and it will chamber them. It wont cycle on its own, but you can pull the bolt back and it will shuck the empty and chamber another.

I have an old Winchester Model 1890 that shoots shorts only. I like shooting the CB shorts because about the only sound is the hammer hitting the firing pin. I've used other shorts that sound like a hammer driving a six penny nail into a board. And shorts have more than enough power to dispatch a rabbit.
Several years ago I used it to snipe a couple squirrels that were tearing up the roof at my parent's house in Richardson. Middle of the afternoon and no one was the wiser.

They definitely won't cycle but you can work the action by hand. In my buddy's henry lever action, the hammer dropping is literally louder than the shot. In my savage they are a little louder than a pellet gun but not by much.

Gemtech subs are quiet.....

Subsonics aren't all that much quieter than a regular LR - they are quieter, don't get me wrong, but shooting them unsuppressed will leave a very audible report. And they will cylce my 10/22 without any problems at all. Throw a can on there and they are hella quiet, which is a lot of fun.

CB longs are quiet as hell - but won't cycle a semi. The good news is that you can cycle them by hand without jamming the action on a 10/22 like a CB short will do.

If you can find it, CCI makes a Quiet .22 ammo - about halfway between a CB and a subsonic. Very quiet out of one of my bolt actions, much longer effective range than a CB and much more accurate to boot. You probably have a good 40 yard kill range out of them (if not more) on a jackrabbit sized game - and you don't need a suppressor because they are quieter than my Benjamin pellet gun. They won't cycle the action in my 10/22, but will allow you to hand operate a semi without jams.

Haven't read the other posts, but just from my experience it's all about barrel length.
A longer barrel the better, and I've found the CB longs to be a little quieter than the (Higher pressure) shorts. Anything subsonic is a close range round so keep that in mind.
Don't take my word for it though, give it a try and find out for yourself!
