I have an itch to build a project rifle for some reason. Should I:

a) find a used .243 or .30 cal action and build up from there
b) use my bone stock Win Mod70 .270 as a donor (I don't use this much anymore)
c) buy a Cooper

I have plenty of guns in the safe (17hmr, 22lr, 22-250, 25-06, 270, 7mm Wby Mag) so I'm not sure why I want another one, but that's never stopped me before. I think it would be fun to build something and then give it to my 9yo son after I shoot it for a bit. He could help me with the build.

I'd like to keep the budget down a bit if I could, which would rule out the Cooper, but DANG those are nice guns.

For a 9 y/o? Since mine will be headed that way soon, the 22-250 or 25-06 sound like good places to start. Been thinking about those two for a while too.

As for that Win .270, save that one just for yourself...;-)

you can turn the .270 into a .280AI (9" twist for 180VLDs)

Coopers are some awesome guns and shoot very well, have one wish I had a bunch more. Like the action and they way they feel and shoot.

One I cannot get off my mind of wanting to build is a 6.5 Grendel bolt action. Start with a CZ 527 carbine in 7.62X39 and replace the barrel, true the action and bed the stock. Would make for a lite recoiling 300+ yard deer rifle in a handy little package.

That would be a good one for younger hunters as well as those like me that figured out years ago it doesn't take a cannon to kill critters.

I'm not into exotic cabliers and I don't reload, so I want something common. That's why I chose the 243 and 308. My 9yo shoots my 25-06 just fine right now. But he can't have that. I had it custom built 3-4 years back and it's a tack driver. And it's my baby. I think a small 243 or maybe another 25-06 would suit him fine for a long time.

The 22-250 and 25-06 are already tuned up and both shoot great. I'm not touching them. The 270 is the only one I would consider messing with since I hardly use it anymore since I got the 25-06. And it's a post-64 Model 70 Lightweight. It wasn't real expensive so it's a good candidate. I could prob just get a new stock for it and have the trigger checked and roll. I had a guy do the trigger on it before so it's pretty dang good already

If you decide to move the Winchester 270 down the road, PM me and let's talk. I've got a bone stock Tikka T3 270 SS/syn I'm looking to come out of.

Sell the Win and get a Remington or Tikka. Buy a #3 Cut Rifle barrel. Find a stock that you like that is already in stock from Mcmillan website or you could go budget and get a B and C.
I would build a 6.5 Creed first since yall don't have one and it is basically the same recoil as the 243. 120 match amax is easy to find and you could go up to 140 gr factory if you need.

Dang, BIL. I agree 100%, and I lean on the Tikka more.

Tikka keeps its' factory trigger, better extractor, side bolt release. You get a Remington 700 action go ahead and plan on chit canning the Rem trigger and adding another $100 to the bill for a Timney trigger.

If you're wanting a custom or semi-custom rifle, go with what BIL and FiremanJG are saying. But, in a 'standard' caliber like the 243 or 308, you can find some mighty fine (read that as accurate) rifles with good triggers off the rack. The Tikka is one of the better one's for the money but you can also go with the Weatherby Vanguard S2 in either caliber, the Howa (which is what the Weatherby is), or, one of the Savage models with the Accu-trigger. All are known shooters and at least the Tikka and the Weatherby come with Sub-moa guarantees.

Pay it forward - Kids are the future.

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.

I go with low recoil and for the first I would still pick 6.5 creed and you don't have to reload (like me, I don't). Im working on a 243 next off a Tikka platform.
With what I described above you can come in at about 8lbs
