Been thinking of going on a black bear hunt in 2015, anyone have any outfitters they recommend? Preferably in the Montana, Idaho, Wyoming region of the country.

This was the first year on the farm to hunt black bear in NW Wyoming. We were 100% this year. By that I mean there was 100% shot opportunity. 2 tagged out (including myself) and the other 2 could have tagged out. I would start trying to guide myself a little but our numbers aren't huge. That being said, I really don't think you can go wrong with Wyoming.
Also, I don't know if you mind hunting bait or not. Wyoming game units are about 50-50 on allowing bait or not. I have no knowledge of Idaho or Montana though.

Just beware of what is being told to you in your search. I hunted New Mexico a few seasons ago. My knowledge on bears was minimal (that's why I hired a guide). I was told average size for the area was 250-350 pound bears and 7 footers were normal. The pictures I was shown looked impressive. The tune changed once I got there. Treed a handful of bears that looked like my lab Earl. I passed on a small boar, maybe a 4 footer, 200ish pounds. Another guy in camp shot it. The pictures made it look huge. Then I understood the game. I went home empty handed and was invited back out for what amounted to watching the guide and his buddies getting hammered drunk for a week and helping another guide chase his dogs around the mountain. I have guided myself so I realize that hunting is hunting and that is how it shakes out sometimes. I can live with not shooting something. But this was an ill prepared outfitter with no plan b and immature party animal guides working for him. Learn from my experience, do research not only on the guide or outfitter but the area you will be hunting. Ultimately I take responsibility for this bad hunt because I went off other peoples word instead of finding out firsthand about everything. Good luck on the search. If you find some good ones post them. I am saving back up to go again in the next year or two.

I've done a ton of research of guides and outfitters but there are so many it's hard to know who is good and who isn't. I really want to avoid a situation like you had capt. I appreciate you sharing your experience.

I'm on the fence about bait or no bait. Some offer hunts with dogs as well. I'm leaning toward a spot stalk hunt but want to be successful.

I know it is not one you mentioned but eastern NC has some huge bears with fairly decent success rate if you choose a good outfitter most will let you bear and deer hunt

Thanks, I'm definitely open to other areas so I'll check into it.

I did a spot and stalk in Montana in spring 2013. 9 days of hunting and never saw a black bear. The outfitter had a million excuses. Beautiful big country. Memories I will never forget. But expensive not to even see a bear. This spring I went to Manitoba and hunted over bait. Good lord one had their chioce of bears and it was pretty much not stop action on the bait. If you enjoy hunting whitetail in a blind looking over a feeder why not hunt a bear over bait the same way. The cost on he two was about the same. I will be doing the bear hunt in Manitobia again. As a side note the fishing was incredible. Caught a limit of walleye every time I went out fishing. The trip from my house to the lodge was less than 24 hours.

Is it a big hassle to hunt in Canada? Like bringing guns to and from and the meat and hide?

Not at all. It was shockingly easy.

Bear Creek Outfitters in Idaho provided my son and I a fine spot and stalk hunt on horseback. Hard working guides with huge exclusive territory. Want to repeat. They have a website with good info or let me know what else I can answer.

Can't help you on the states you've listed. I've taken 2 bear. One in CO and one in BC. The CO bear came while was elk hunting. I grew up there and always bought a bear tag when elk hunting. The BC bear was taken with Dennis Smith's Bear Paw Outfitters. He ran a good outfit and every hunter except 1 took a bear. The one that didn't was holding out for a monster bigger than others he had shot and passed on several bear. BC doesn't allow baiting and the spring hunts are all done spot and stalk.

I'm starting to really get interested in Canada, are there extra cost associated with bringing guns and trophy ?

I would highly advise going to the DSC show here in a few weeks. You can get an idea of what it takes

Last Sept. I hunted with Spirit Creek Outfitters Saskatchewan. All hunts are over bait and we saw bear every day. I would like to go back for a spring hunt. as far as cost of travel with a firearm. You need a hardside case that locks the firearm will count as one bag so it depends on how many you bring and your airline fees. you can put clothes with the gun if you have space. I made it with 2 checked bags and my carry on. a third bag was about $125.00 with Delta at that time. I left my bear in canada so the Taxi. can make a rug and then ship it to me. I think it cost $35.00 for the Non resident firearm Declaration. No handguns, no semi autos and if you have a record don't think you will make it into Canada.

Record part is correct. We are permitted semi autos. I have a semi auto shotgun (A5) for water fowl. Semi auto rifles are also permitted for big game as long as barrel is over 18 inches. Hand guns are also allowed (with the correct licence) but not permitted for hunting.
