Not being totally up on Nikons I'd:
A. go look at their website Home Page for hard info & pick out the features that interest you most and write them down before I went to the Gettin A Scope Store 'causer it can be Waaaay too confusing sometimes, specailly when retail stores Don't ALWAYS have a complete selection to SEE the differences from one price poiunt to another in the same Brand of Model of scope.

& B. Not that I ever heard of anyway on the Rim Fire Only.... Pro Staff's now come in all sorts of levels, usages - shotgun/rimfire/pistol & CF Rifle and in at least 2 - TWO - Dos - Zwei different feature levels and price points called ?? Pro Staff 1 & Pro Staff 5...and mebbe more than that dunno.

you all are missing one. I am as big a Savage fan as there is. BUT, the remy 783 IS A SHOOTER, less than $400. likes shelf ammo, I don't think they make it in .243,but .270, .308 are hard to beat, about the barrel burn out, come on, are you really going to shoot enough to burn the barrel out? the average shooter,NO, besides some of the new savage models don't come wit that easy knurled nut to take off.

now, i am a college student. so a winchester legend or a s&w masterpiece is totally out of the question.
but it seems "budget rifles" are gaining some ground. ive looked at a few and asked on other places specifically for just rifles, about the mossberg 100 ATR, the savage axis, remington 700, the marlin x7y, and the ruger american.
and i have narrowed down my options to the

ruger american

and the mossberg 100 ATR

im leaning more towards the ruger american, seeing as ruger seems to be a little more trust worthy than mossberg rifles. i know mossberg shotguns are great, but some of the things ive read about mossberg rifles...makes me doubt it. the ruger american on the other hand, my buddy got it in .308 and i loved it! granted its only been a few weeks since he's had it but i feel like ruger would be the best choice! anybody own these? it will be my designated hunting rifle. but it will go to the range more just so that i can get comfortable with it. and practice my accuracy. so what do you guys think between the 2? good hunting rifle for a beginner? would it be worth the hassle in the long run?
now for caliber. im down to either:

22-250

or

.243

i plan on hunting coyote mostly, but lets face it, when a man wants some deer jerky, you just cant calm it down with beef jerky! so i would like something that with good shot placement will down a deer quickly. i hate to see deer suffer, coyotes i dont care, but deer are not only tasty, but beautiful!
so i want something that will give a coyote the business and down me a white tail or an axis whenever i get the craving for deer jerky.
im not really concerned about leaving the coyote pelt intact, i mean i would like some coyote mittens and a coyote blanket and a coyote coat. but im not to worried about it. but it would be nice. any thoughts on which caliber to get?
thanks in advance!

true, i considered a .308 but decided on a smaller caliber for less recoil. and .270, granted it could take down a full grown water buffalo and its grandfather, but its just not what i need right now. and i did look at the 783, but decided against it.

The 243 will cover both coyotes and whitetail easily and would be my choice if I were to only have one rifle. I would also be leaning toward the Ruger American as it is competively priced, shoots great and is guaranteed for life no matter who owns it in the future.
I'm just getting into coyote hunting and am going to look at guns today....leaning towards a Mossberg MVP varmint in .223/5.56
Cabelas has the Nikon Buckmaster 3-9 on sale for $129 ($100 off)
Good Luck!

I have one of the marlin x7 in 270, it shot pretty good right from the start, I also have a ruger American in 243 and have yet to shot it but it seems pretty solid for the 300 dollar price tag
