Ive been wanting to build a suped-up 22 for a long time now. But Im curious to know yalls opinions on how to go about it. Ive always liked the idea of a Volquartsen laminate stock, with a free floating fluted barrel. What kind of distance can i expect it to tack-drive out to. Whats the best platform to start with. Which barrel is the best to go with? Lots of questions but id like yalls opinions and pics of youre rigs as well. Thanks in advance guys.

I'd start with a 22 TCM from Rock Island Armory. 2800 fps out of their rifle, 2100 fps out of a 911.

Ive thought about that P. I have the commander length 1911 of theirs, Very potent round. You might have the right idea about that one! But I hate having to neck down the 223 brass!

Wouldn't you just buy the rounds? Last I checked they were about $38 per 100.

What kind of 22? You can take a 22-250 and shoot 1000 yards with about a 375" drop.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Wouldn't 200 yards be about the limit of the 22 LR?

It would indeed. With a good barrel and ammo it liked you can make pretty small holes out to 100, much be on that and it gets dicey. Since you're looking at mods, and a Volquartsen stock I can only assume you mean a 10/22. With 10/22's the sky is the limit. The main thing is either get a good aftermarket trigger, or get a kit to fix the stock one. Pick the stock of your choice. These days I'm of the mind that an aftermarket extractor is a must have as well. Then a mag release of whatever style/design you like.

Now, if you wanted a sweet 22 LR target type rifle straight out of the box (just as an alternative) you might look at an Anschutz. The problem is they're pricey as hell. They're worth it though.

My 22-250 only drops 264" at a 1000yrds or 7.3 mils ...... wink

for a .22lr go with a CZ455 and start tuning it up,,,,, easy inexpensive action and lots of aftermarket parts....

Savage Mark II. Here's a guy shooting .22LR at 344 yards at a 12" plate.

I have the Savage Mark II FV-SR which is the black threaded barrel version. Changed the scope rail to a 25 MOA one, changed the stock, added a scope.

I got a half dozen high end 10/22's. They all shoot 1000 yards lights out. I ain't kiddin, maybe lying though. Seriously, don't try to shoot past 100 yards with 22lr, it just makes you look silly. Be happy with a 50 yard tack driver that never, ever misses. Shoot that rifle 100 yards and be disappointed. It will definitely spread and consistency is all but lost.

100 yards and beyond is a job for 223.

Totally forgot about the CZ's. CZ makes some slick 22's.

I have a really, REALLY hard time when I have to hand that gun back to the guy behind the counter. One day I'm gonna walk out with it. Once I pay of course. Lol

There was a guy on here with an extra barrel for sale too. Don't know if it ever sold.

Appreciate all the replies guys. I know about 150 is my maximum distance with 22lr. I really like that bottom savage of yours toxarch. Especially the threaded fluted barrel. How does she shoot? Wanted to can mine in the future as well, so that barrel is right up my alley. Also, what stock are you running on it now.

With .22LR how far you can shoot good groups all depends on the wind. At 50 yards with no wind the right shooter and rifle can shoot 1 hole groups and still get respectable groups at 100.

One of my friends has a Savage Mark II FV-SR like the one pictured. He had a can on it and surprised me when he cranked the elevation dial on his cheap BSA scope and was consistently hitting steel at 200 yards from the get go.

200 yards is easy with a good rifle. It's even easier with Match ammo. Mine shoots great. Only downside is only 5 and 10 round mags are available. Suppressed, since it's a bolt action, about the only thing you hear is the pin and the bullet hitting the target.
Here's the info on the rifle:
Boyds Tacticool stock , nylon spacers, DIP trigger guard and base plate, Harris bipod, DIP 25 MOA rail, Mueller APT 4.5-14x40, Mueller 3" shade, Weaver 6 hole low rings

And if you want to see other setups and range results, there's an 85 page thread on the Savage rimfires on AR15.com.

Volquartsen components are top of the line....if not "the" top. Had Tom Volquartsen build me this one over 25 years ago, back before he became famous for his .22's. The rifle is capable of one hole groups at 100 yards using Eley Tennex ammo. Keep in mind that when discussing .22 rimfire accuracy, the gun is only half the equation.....the other half is the ammo. Tom cut the chamber to match the ammo I would be using in competition.

We enjoy shooting "flies" at 100 yards. Sprinkle Coke on a blank target and let the sugar dry, flies will land on the paper and be attracted to the dried sugar. A hit is when the bullet hole has bug blood around the edges. Amazing what we find to entertain ourselves.

To wring out that kind of accuracy from a 10/22 you'll need to spend some money on both the rifle and ammo.

Best nail drivers I've found are the old Winchester model 52's....accuracy without any extra work needed.

Day yum Rembrandt, those are freaking gorgeous!!! That's the look I had in mind. Phenomenal rigs you have there. Thanks for the spec list on that savage. I think that's what I'll build. Then when I have some disposable income I'll build one of those like yours Rembrandt.

If only I could find a way to open the channel in this stock so I could fit a fat barrel to this. I don't know how high end it is but I built it myself from a new rifle that came with a plastic butt plate, plastic trigger, plastic barrel band. The guts of the home polished TG are all shimmed, bigger pinned, and all the springs have been changed. All the controls are updated and it has a Volquartsen hammer. Break is clear as a bell at about 1 pound 14 ounces. I did the wood too....

Pass the gravy.

It would take me about an hour to open that up for a bull barrel. But I wouldn't do it to a carbine stock.

I have HIT a target with a 22 and over 300... a gallon jug of milk.... it dinted/cracked the shell but didn't really penetrate. We were shooting off a balcony like 150 feet elevation off the wheat field we were shooting at and I walked on to target.

Volquartsen is the gold standard. I'd get a 10/22 and one of there barrels. i'd probably go with a 10 22 folding stock so it would be more handy in the truck.

I as good as the semi autos get accuracy wise... I don't understand why you would go bolt... .22 is about the only thing I can that about
