Anyone have any knowledge on how Far East mule deer used to range before the population of whitetail exploded along with the drought of the 50's?

It would seem like Far East val verde, western Edwards and sutton would have held some but I am unsure

I think you may be on to something. I never hunted that area. I do believe that in the panhandle region, mulies are moving eastward. I heard a mulie was killed just west of Wichita falls a few years back. I've seen pics on THF of mulies that seem to be expanding their range. Hard to do I'm sure, with the more prolific and aggressive WT also expanding their range.

What I'm trying to validate is a theory that mule deer could have ranged into the far western hill country and the drought and sheep herds moved them out

This paper by TPWD shows mule deer ranges at several different points in history. See page 3.

I've seen them as far east as Irion County.

I read that a few min ago. Looks like my theory was wrong

They have made a good comeback since the 40's though
