I loaded up some 95 grain VLDs for my Sako 243, which it isn't supposed to have a fast enough twist but they group a consistent 3/4" at 100 so I just went with it. I haven't shot anything with a Berger yet except the 52 grain Varmint out of a 22-250, which are devastating to say the least. Anyway, I had them touching the rifling and 34.0 grains of Varget pushing them. I shot this buck at about 200-225 and hit him dead center in the heart. There was a pencil hole in and a quarter hole out. He ran 100 yards but the blood trail looked like someone sprayed it with a super soaker water gun. It was 2 feet high and all over every bush and cactus. A lot of you will like the performance of the bullet but I prefer a behind the shoulder shot and a bullet that grenades upon entry. I prefer an SST or BT style bullet but I wanted to give these a try. Yes I know the deer is dead, but I would rather have no exit wound and the heart and both lungs turned to soup. I don't need a blood trail if that happens; they are usually anchored. And the buck isn't very good but that's one of two that I had a green light on.
So for me the jury is still out on the VLDs. They shoot excellent and the deer is as dead as all other dead deer but I don't like tracking them. I just wonder what the result would have been with a less than perfect shot. I still have a couple of doe to shoot before I decide if that is my permanent load. I say permanent because once I order my elevation dial I don't want to change.
They work really well on coyotes when you shoot them in the mouth though.
