How good is Lake City 5.56 brass for precision reloading? A friend will give me all I need if I want it. I know I have to remove the military primer. Other than that, should I use this or buy Hornady brass?

I've only used Lake City in 308. It's thick and tough. If you want precision ammo with it I recommend getting 50 or 100 round ammo boxes and weighing the brass after decapping and removing the crimp. The thicker the wall the higher your powder charge will sit in the column, closer to the bullet. If Ihad a deal of free LC brass I'd dang sure try it. Weigh it and seperate it to fit within certain limits above and below one number.

LC's 5.56 brass is excellent. You may get best results weighing and sorting if you want to go to such lengths, bit I personally don't find that necessary. Also, I have found that LC 5.56 brass has just as much capacity as commercial brass, often just a bit more in fact.

I think it depends on your definition of precision...

For me and my abilites/goals with an ar it is prolly fine

For a bench rest guy who weighs each case and culls bad ones it's not.

LC is great cause of availability but there can be some variability.

Buying a Wilson Combat SPR barrel, going to buy Redding dies and weigh each charge with my ChargeMaster. I'm doing everything else right, I don't want to cheap on brass and loose quality of my reloads

I load a lot on the LC brass, and I have gotten very good results with it. It is good brass for the money. Sure you can spend 2x-3x more and get better brass, but that's the balance.

This.

There's no such thing as 5.56 and .223 brass. Only differences are manufacturers.

I didn't even know the 1050 had that feature...I've looked as far as the 650 and think it's pretty nice but the 1050's definitely a Cadillac piece of equipment. I think the stand-alone swager's a pretty good way to go for just dealing with crimped primer pockets, just a bit pricey. A long time ago I could have had one cheap but didn't foresee myself needing it.

If I don't load on the 1050 to remove the crimp, I use the RCBS crimp removal chamfer tool that goes on the case prep center. It shaves the crimp away.

I have the universal one that does large and small.

This is nice, reasonably priced swage set that you can use with your press for both small and large rifle primers. CH4D
