With a few less pellets to bring down the birds, this is when I actually do spend more money on shells. We have been using Heavy Metals with pretty good results (use the Carlson Heavy Metal Choke tube as well). You can get away with less expensive shells for sure. If I weren't hunting with my daughter, I would be using the cheapest I could find.

Winchester makes those blind side shells. They range from 2 shot to 5 shot. They are 24 a box though. Found some regular winchester 4 shot I think at Wal mart for around 13$ a box 3 inch shells for both the blind side and the high velocity

Kent 3" #4's. Patterns well out of my 870, and the Fiancé's SX3. Even at 7/8oz, it's 1550fps.

One ounce of tungsten 6s for ducks and one ounce of 4s for geese.
Now, if it's a kid who doesn't shoot very well... One ounce of steel 4s for ducks.
Thought for the day: Ducks were almost hunted to extinction long before camo was invented.
