I grew up on a farm and wore a straw hat all the time to keep the sun from burning my face and ears so bad (this can happen if you don't have hair hanging over your ears). I wear a hard hat in the field at work most days and to this day I almost always have a straw hat on. I've got an old black felt that I rarely wear unless its really cold. I don't own a ranch so I guess that makes me a poser to some of you clowns but I couldn't care less. Baker

I will say this. I don't care if someone wants to wear a cowboy hat. More power to you. I grew up in East Texas. Most of the real rednecks had no idea they were rednecks. They didn't wear anything to try to look like a redneck or a cowboy. Again, not that there's anything wrong with it. An east Texas redneck and cowboy are worlds apart.

Eli, sure you're a rancher. It looks like you're raising exotics in the back yard. Hunt, sure an East Texas redneck is not always a cowboy. I was mostly pointing out that one gentleman had posted something to the effect that when young Jensen grows into a man, he will wear a Stetson or resistol. A big hat does not make a man. Sometimes a man wears a little hat, or a hard hat, or maybe even a tinfoil hat. I think they don't wear flat bills though.

Do all grown men wear cowboy hats? Most grown men that I know that wear one are posers. Even all the real ranchers I know don't wear one. What is a real rancher? Do you have to be a rancher to wear a cowboy or western style hat? What about a rancher hat?

No you don't have to be a farmer or rancher to wear one but a basic understanding of the hat will tell you what purpose it serves. Is anybody that doesn't wear one less than a man? Yes my question is just as dumb as both of yours.

1. You feel safer walking in the woods during the day than when it's dark. 2. It can get too cold to hunt. 3. Cleaning a deer is a pain. 4. You want to kill the biggest buck in camp. 5. You go hunting when your spouse says it's okay. 6. Recoil is not easy to ignore. 7. Venison is very expensive. 8. Just owning a $1000 scope doesn't make you an expert marksman. 9. Men are just as guilty in never owning enough camo as women are with shoes and purses. 10. Practice (shooting) makes perfect. 1. Ummm not really. 2. Hasn't happened yet, but only been down to 4F or so 3. Again, not really. Cleaning an Elk or Bull Nilgai is a pain. 4. Freely admit it 5. Don't need permission, but as a Husband and a Father it's on me to keep the balance appropriate 6. Always advise guys to go with a gun they can shoot well vs. the latest Magnum wonder 7. No. Venison is cheap. It's all the toys that I buy using venison as an excuse that are expensive 8. Absolutely not. 9. Disagree. I've got my go-to gear for most temperature ranges, don't need much more. 10.Absolutely true. Baker I'm the exact same way. A straw hat is a great tool to keep me from getting burned. Wear one most days I'm working outside so most of my straws have a lovely band of sweat and dirt around them. I have a nice felt, but I'm too hot-natured to wear it unless it's below 40 or so. Never could get use to wearing a cowboy hat indoors or in the city so guess i'm not "legit".

How did I get drug into this? My comment was directed at tt85. Although it looks like he asked three dumb questions instead of just two.

1)I used to feel this way, now it is not much of a bother. I am more cautious of running into a poacher or meth head.
2)I don't mind the cold, but I will say it can get too windy & cold for me. If it is howling with a 20 degree windchill I will gladly sleep in .
3) It has been years since I have harvested a deer so at this point I would be very happy with cleaning one.
4)of course
5)I don't think any man has to ask for permission to go and hunt, but you how much you hear about it depends if you go at a dumb time when things were supposed to get done. I know a lot of people on here put up their I do what I want and no one tells me what to do act on here, but it is all about having an understanding with each other. I would certainly like to know when my wife is going shopping or out with the girls. I personally prefer going knowing I handled my business beforehand. I enjoy the hunt more than when I know my wife is home pissed.
6) I hunt deer with a 22 so no issue there. JK
7) It is and if you say otherwise you are rich, or you happen to get to hunt free out your back porch or someones land close by. It is expensive. Process your own deer? Good for you, but I bet you can do jerky as good as Kuby's or wherever you favorite processor is.
8) This is true, but it makes a lot of guys feel better about themselves. Kinda like the guy that gets a f-250 and puts rims on it. However if you have lots of disposable income, why not? I certainly would.
9)Really the only one that doesn't really apply to me. I hunt in a blind, so if it is warm I wear shorts and a t shirt. In cold weather I wear a t shirt and jeans. The deer I see usually don't mind my snoring or constant munching of snacks. Camo is nice, but not necessary for me or where I hunt.
10) I shoot once at the beginning of the season to make sure my scope is on. Thats all the practice I do. Ammo is expensive.
I only lie when I tell the truth.

The topic of cowboy hats brings as much flack as AR's and 3/4 ton diesel trucks
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I think I wore a cowboy hat when I was around 4-5. Since then Ive never wore another and have no desire to.
That list is pretty dumb though. Walking in the daylight is preferable because I can see without the moon or flashlight. I dont wear camo, am dont have a spouse.
