Always a great time when you have your best hunting buddy with you. Over the past few years it's been my wife, Angela. Since tiring of me always being gone taking care of work with Steve at the ranch year 'round, she found herself coming with me and finding the passion we all have for the outdoors and its creatures. At Antler Hunt Ranch we have both HF and LF property, allowing us to enjoy LF opportunities as guides. So over the past 3yrs now we have made it part of our anniversary to take the time out and go hunting together. This year has been rather difficult as late with her and her sister taking on the task of taking care of their Mom a 'round the clock job at times, this will be her first time out in some time so I will make the best of it for her. With my normal busy fall schedule at work plus marketing and guiding at the ranch, we have little time.
We left early Thursday morning from Houston 12/11 and arrived that afternoon in Talpa and got everything unloaded (She can pack) then hurried off to dinner where we had reservations at Perini Ranch Steakhouse in Buffalo Gap. Great place if you haven't been and are near the Abilene area.
Friday morning 12/12 we got in stand early. We saw a real nice 8pt that I had to hold her back on, it was to young. Does came rolling thru but still no shooters. Trail cams had showed some promise of good bucks more than a month earlier but the rut made them scatter from pics since. That afternoon we got in the stand early since moon was still somewhat bright. Sat down around 1:00pm just enjoying the nice cool breeze. Having a sounder of 17 hogs roll in about 3:30 I refrained myself from shooting. That was tough but in no way did I want to lessen our chances by a shot ringing. A 6pt and does came in just minutes after the hogs and only stayed a bit. I guess the calm before the storm, off about 250 yds to our rear and downwind of course, I see horns coming thru the high grass and mesquite. Coming quickly and on a mission. I get Angela in position out of the window where I think his path will take him. It works out perfectly and he has now circled around toward Angela's side of the blind and soon to cross her path. I ask if she is ready. Yes, is the reply and I gave a quick bleat to stop him. He stops and seconds later the shot from her Browning, striking the beautiful buck at 80yds. a little high but nonetheless he was down within 30yds. For the 2nd year in a row, she has scored on our anniversary with a nice buck. This 14pt animal will be hard for me to top next year. Once the taxi fixes the broken point he's a 15. Hope we'll get to see him hanging in the lodge soon
Good luck to everyone out there and hope you to can share similar experiences with your loved ones. Have a great holiday and thanks for reading our story
