I got some new decoys from Basspro (their brand). I was thinking of using valspar FLAT clear coat to help protect them. I dont think the flat will cause them to shine. Do any of you do this?

I don't do it but that does not mean it is right or wrong. Try one out but remember, birds don't see like we see. What is flat to us could reflect light completely different to them. We might all look at it thinking it is flat but all the while they might look at it as if it were Rudolph the Red nosed reindeer.

I clear coated some once but wasn't very happy with it because it flaked. I'm not the best detail guy on paint prep though.

I always do and I never noticed birds reacting any differently to them. I've done research on it and pretty much 50% of people say it makes birds flare and the other 50% say it doesn't make them flare. I used a Matte clear coat and if you put it next to a decoy with no coat on it you cant tell the difference.

Thinking about it some more I don't believe I would do it. I am a decoy snobby jerk. Meaning I am very (Out of the ordinary) picky about decoys. Brand, rigging, species, placement ect. To the point where my brother and I can go at it on a sandbar if he isn't treating the decoys the right way. My mallard full body spreads are in slotted bags. He will take them out and set them on the ground, just to light my into a pissed off frenzy. That will give you the extreme end of my spectrum. So me personally, no way would I spray clear coat on my decoys. I am switching over to what I believe is the best decoy you can purchase, arguably of course, so I don't have to worry about it.

I did this years ago on some and they did the same. I have had good luck washing the dekes and then spraying them down with armor all occasionally (read about it in DU I think...) It keeps the paint real vibrant and I think less likely to rub off. If you have spots where paint has rubbed off you can touch it up with standard acrylic paint and it will get you through longer than you would think.

Krylon Matte Finish....works great....doesn't change the look of the decoy at all but it definitely will make them last longer.... DO NOT use this stuff if your decoys are wet or even have a slight bit of moisture....it will cause the finish to be milky and will ruin your decoys....

I did after I repaint them. No problem with birds flaring

I would recommend doing a couple light coats to prevent that cloudy look.

I did it on some GHG wigeon and mallard decoys that were chipping badly. 1) It helped the chipping issue 2) I never once thought that birds flared because of it.

I don't do it to my decoys any more, but wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I think it helps.
