.....for woods carry I use my Springfield 9mm; its the largest handgun that I own. Some of the places that I hunt in East Texas are far away from any roads or homes and there are lots of hogs, so I've been thinking that a larger caliber pistol would be a better choice. I'm thinking about getting a Ruger Blackhawk revolver in 45 Colt. Even though it only holds six rounds (my springfield holds 16) it would pack a lot more punch...especially with some 325 grain Buffalo Bore ammo. The 9mm rounds are kinda puny next to the 45LC. As an added bonus the revolver could also shoot shot shells for snakes. I guess my question is if the 9mm is adequate as a deep-woods defensive side arm.

I would be more worried about 2 legged vermin than hogs, so I would much rather have 16 rnds of 9mm than 6 rnds of 45 colt, but if you are wanting snake shot then the 45 colt would be better.

When I'm out and about on the lease I carry a colt delta elite. It's 10mm. Plenty of punch and more than enough shots with 2 mags. I also carry a glock 23. It's 40 cal and I have 13 rounds. Problem I see with the blackhawk u mentioned is that it's single action

I do worry about coming across some crazed meth heads.

FNX-45. 15+1 of 45ACP is really hard to beat. Plus, you can carry cocked and locked. The grip isn't too big and the weight isn't bad.

How about a full size Glock 10mm?

If you want a lot of rounds with plenty of knock-down, I'd say go with a 357 Sig or a 10mm.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I'm rolling with a Glock 20 10mm. Only reason I got it was for what you describe. I have 15 rounds of 10mm which is great for getting after some piggies.

You should give some serious thought to thanking your lucky stars your from Texas.

I totally second that notion. It's surprisingly easy to handle for a handgun that holds so many 45's. I can shot a glock 21 fairly well, but it's a bit large and takes effort to handle and it only has 13+1. Same sort of goes for the USP. To me the FN was much more comfortable.
And i always feels obligated to mention ammo cost. I don't think I'd start going the 45LC route without some heavy consideration as to how much i want to spend on ammo, which really for me means that I would shoot it much less often. What can I say? I'm sort of stingy about somethings.

It's a simple answer- 10mm!!! I've shot crap with 40's and 45's, and it has no comparison to the 10mm. A 200 grain XTP in a G20 will flat out hammer stuff. I shot a pig in a trap right in the head with a 45 from about 7 feet, and the bullet zipped a 6" cut on his forehead, and never penetrated his skull. I've done the exact same shot with a 200 XTP, and DRT on the spot. For field use, it's hard to beat a 10mm. I have 1- G20 and 2- G29's. I carry a G29 daily with 180 XTP or 175 Win Silver Tips.

Interesting, which bullet did you use in the 45? I shot a pig from 3 feet away with a 9mm and it ricocheted off of his head. Followed up with a 45 200 grain XTP which blew a heck of a large hole in his head.

230 Gold Dot out of a 3" Kimber. So, not a lot of speed in the 3" barrel. I needed 2 mags full to kill about 4 pigs. I liked the Kimber, but I'm a Glock guy, and I have never liked the external safeties. I sold the Kimber, and converted over to all Glocks. I've gone to the dark side, and can't go back!

3" barrel on any 45 sounds like an issue of not being able to build up enough velocity.

I've been through lots of pistols and did not care Glocks for several reasons. The key is to pick what each person feels comfortable with, can control and shoot accurately under pressure, that they will actually carry, and then practice regularly. The answer will be different for everyone.

Yes, that's why I sold the Kimber. I went to all 40 cal (40 and 10mm), plus to 1- G21 in 45 acp I have. And +1 on the rant. If I ranted, they would kick me out of this place.

Thanks for the good replies folks. I got to try a 45LC revolver and I love everything about it. But I've decided to stay with the 9mm a little while longer. I don't know much about 10mm....I'm going to look into those for sure.

X2, bullet could ricochet off the skull, blowing the gate latch off, creating havoc. Maybe that is why those redneck meat hunters use well placed 22 LR bullets. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Couldn't agree more about the FNX, it's my hunting side arm. Not as sexy as the Kimber CPD but it packs twice as many rounds and handles/shoots well.
