Moose (Alces alces) is the largest member of the deer family. Mature males sometimes weigh up to 1500 lbs. Moose were introduced to the province of Newfoundland in 1906, and because of the excellent forage have increased their numbers to 120,000.

Many areas of the province boast the highest moose densities in the world. A large bull moose, standing higher than a large saddle horse and sporting a massive antler display can be an imposing and challenging quarry.

The mating period for moose, considered by many hunters the most successful time for hunting, runs from late September to early November. Notwithstanding the rut period, some of the very best times for hunting moose is after the rut, during the latter part of November.

Newfoundland moose are classified as "Eastern Canadian" by "Boone and Crockett", "Pope and Young", and "Safari Club International". Though generally smaller in body and antler size than their Alaskan cousins, Newfoundland moose are no less challenging to hunt.

Hunting season begins in early September with a two week "archery only" component, followed by a general season with archery, rifle and muzzleloader until the end of November.

MOOSE HUNTING SUCCESS RATES IS 90% (21 YEAR AVERAGE).

Hunting moose is both a challenging and tremendously rewarding experience. Moose rely heavily on their sense of hearing and smell but less on their sense of sight.

The hunting style is Spot and Stalk mixed with a hearty component of "bugling and rattling" especially during the rut period.

Each day begins with an early rise, a hot shower and a hearty breakfast. You will leave camp just as the dawn begins to show. Access to prime hunting areas is readily available whether you travel on foot, by boat, or by eight wheeled ATV. You will "still hunt" the known feeding areas during early morning and late evening. During mid-day you will hunt the areas between bedding and feeding. Extensive glassing and careful movement is very important as moose blend very well with the color of their surroundings, and they tend to favor areas with abundant cover. This often makes them difficult to see.

Your guide will provide everything needed to support you during your days afield. It is important to communicate with your guide as this will insure that every element of your hunt is tailored to your specific needs.

Please note that we can arrange on your behalf an assortment of hunting support services including taxidermy, game butchering, cold storage, packaging, and shipping

We have dates available from the End of Sept through November. Please let us know which dates you prefer and we can go from there. Typically you fly in on a Sunday and out the following Sunday.

Game processing and shipping information - 2015

For hunters driving to Newfoundland, it is recommended that you travel in/with a vehicle suitable for return transport of your game. Essentially that means a pick-up in which a styro-foam insulated box has been constructed; a trailer in which a styro-foam insulated box has been constructed; or, either of the previous two with sufficient operational refrigerators or coolers.
For those hunters who fly to Newfoundland, game will be packaged in styro-foam insulated, wax lined boxes, each containing approximately 50 pounds of game. Frozen game along with antlers and capes will be shipped to US destinations via refrigerated truck. Game shipments will occur at the end of hunting season ie approximately the first week of December, and will arrive at a designated location within 14 days after shipping. You will be notified of the arrival of your game. It will be held in cold storage for up to 30 days after arrival.
Butchering services are available locally. The services will include preparation of a frozen, freezer ready product of steaks, roasts, ground meat, stewing meat, and sausage in accordance with your personal specification. It will be packaged in quantities to meet your family needs as you describe to the butcher. It will be available for pick up by yourself if you drive to Newfoundland, or, we will arrange shipping on your behalf, if you drive or fly to Newfoundland. (“If required” items below relevant to those who do not require shipping.)

Please note – this is not a “door-to-door” service. Your game will be directed to the contracted freezer facility closest to your home city, from which you will be asked to pick up your game.

Overall cost of Butchering will depend on the extent and quantity of additional processing.

Approximate Costs: Butchering - Moose Approx $525.00
Insulated Boxes (If required) Approx $150.00
Handling $250.00
Shipping (If required)(6 boxes) Approx $650.00

Taxidermy services are available locally from several reputable firms. Rates, and return times may vary slightly, depending upon the nature of the work involved. Pine Ridge Lodge will provide the contact information for each taxidermist, and will provide interim cold storage, and transport of your trophies to your chosen local taxidermist. The fee for this service is $50.00 per trophy. You will be responsible for maintaining contact with your taxidermist, and for payments associated with the work and with shipping of your completed trophy.

Handling involves delivery to the butcher (1 way trip of 100 miles); pick up from the butcher, and transfer to a holding freezer facility to await shipping (1 way trip of 130 miles); preparation of export documents; cleaning and wrapping of antlers in accordance with FDA and customs regulations.
