As the title states, how do yall come up with the names of the different deer you have showing up? I'm terrible at naming things, whether its deer or even my dog lol. I've got a few deer on cam and quite a few I see fairly regularly and when describing them to my BIL he's just like which one? You have around 6 that meets that description.

History and/or antler characteristics. Once we get a few pics of them, we use the name to define them. Much easier than trying to describe them each time. Examples: Pretty 10, high tower, goal post, sombrero, THE 9, wide track, forky, etc Just pick a name you can remember

That ten point, that 8 point, that deer with the broken beam, etc
We get real creative with it
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I've been trying. Only name I have so far is Split. I've got a nice young 9 with a split brow tine. The rest are just bad. I have around 4 or 5 different young 8s, a 9, couple of 6s, and 3 fork horns. I cant really go with history, as this is the first year I've put a game cam up on this place. I've hunted it the past 4 years out of my BILs stand, and this year I've made my own spot so these are all "new-to-me" this year. But I do have a few up and comers in a few years

Whatever pops in my head when I see them.
This year so far we've killed "Janky", a tall 6-pt cull. Also killed "Yowza!" a nice 10-pt. Still looking for "Wide Brows", the "Big 7", and "Pathetic."

I don't really name deer, my wife will at the house I have named a few while on hunts, but mostly ones that beat me at the game. A few names, Chit, MOFO, sumbit%$. To name one as an "8" is more a description than a name..

Bruiser - a ten point that looked like one of those show steers Blondie - a very like colored doe Cyclops - a one eye buck. Fortunately it was just swollen shut for a while Whitey - a buck with very white antlers. Most of our bucks are dark I had at least 3 8 point + at a blind and several smaller bucks. I named them to keep them straight. I forgot some of the other names I used.

I ask our hunters to suggest names and then we pick one - on 9000 acres it comes in handy when guys are talking about various deer.
Hoss Pila buck - was first seen near a water pila Big Boy Airplane Crip - leg has an old injury on it
And on and on -
You can't fix stupid

We typically name the shooters - typically describing the antlers or something unique about the buck - a few times its been renamed from the story around how the buck was taken...
Dos - a nice buck that scored 152 12pt buck that hung around for round 2 Big Stud - 4-1/2 nice symmetrical 10pt with 14" G2s Lil Stud - 2-1/2 buck that is clearly off Big Studs bloodline - identical body/antlers just a year or two younger Misplaced - the 8pt buck I almost lost from this year's bow season Carl - nice 155 12pt named for a NM guide I met while Elk hunting Crooked-10 - very unique rack with even but crooked G3s on both sides Napoleon - nice 12pt that showed up twice on camera in the middle of the day beautiful rack but vertically challenged

I just think it's silly I guess, maybe I'm weird, it's like naming pets, half the time they aren't even talking about the same deer. "Hooks" was at 2 different stands at the same time???

I have heard different reasons for not naming them, just always curious. I hunt on a large acreage place and our deer travel a lot from stand to stand. We see a lot of the same deer year after year and will pick a few to hunt each year. We have a lot of deer and when we say a name of one, the others know which one we are talking about. Can't say "that ten", because we might have 10 different ones on camera. Thanks for the answer And it sounds like you might hunt with liars or folks with bad eyesight...a deer named hooks should be easy to identify

Cinco- a five point that recently lost his life.
Drumstick- a young 8 point that has a knob on the tip of his left brow. My son said it looks just like a drumstick, so that's his name.
Lope- a very tall and narrow 8 point that looks like a pronghorn, so me and my son shortened the name "antelope"
Venom- my son named him after the Spiderman villain because he has a black face.
Beyonce- a solid black doe.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.
