I know this will likely get some people going, but I'm thinking of adding another rifle to the fold in one of those two calibers. On Hornady's chart, to 500yds it's a dead heat and I doubt that other than steel I'd ever shoot one further. From what I can tell most of the positives weigh in on the side of the -08. What do you guys think?

Since I'm have a 7mm-08 built as we speak, I'll give it the nod

I'll be running a 168 berger classic hunter, the 140gr Amax 6.5 cant hang as far as energy goes and wind drift is the same BUT the 6.5 will be a little flatter out to a grand

The 6.5 will be a little flatter shooting since you are pushing a 140 about 2800 fps. The 7mm-08 will run a 162 A-max about 2700 fps, maybe 2750. The 7mm will be able to run higher BC bullets a little slower, so it will retain better energy at longer distances. If you are only shooting steel, I'd go 6.5CM. If you plan to hunt, I'd go 7mm-08 with a 162 A-max or 168 VLD, since it will hit harder. I've taken the 7mm-08 with 162 A-max to a mile (1780 yards, actually).

I was going though the same thing and picked me upa .270 wsm today , yo might look at the data on it . The thing that made my mind up was ammo avabilty where i am at and just the fact of how flat it shoots but i am sure there will be some that say its not a very good round .

Would you not suggest the 6.5 on Whitetail over 500 yards?

Killed whitetail out to 731 with the 6.5, We have guided plenty of 625 yard mule deer with the 6.5 creed. It has plenty to get the job done.

Like Derrick shows, the 6.5 is plenty for deer. I wouldn't hesitate with good conditions taking a deer or pig at 600-700 yards, even with my 6.5x47, which is slower than a CM. If you want a little more bullet weight, the 7mm-08 would be good. It has a higher BC than the 6.5. But it's a toss up really for either. The 7mm08 will have more drop, but have more energy on target. But you are splitting hairs kind of. Go exotic, and get both- 7mm Creedmoor! Neck the 6.5 up to 7!

I have a 7 creed reamer already on order about 5 months ago

7-08 = more energy delivery outside 500

6.5 Creedmoor = case geometry = very consistent shooter.

Both are great chamberings when a 140 gr. is put in the 6.5mm and a 162 or 168 gr is put in the 7mm. Pick one.

PTG already has the reamer for that too. Not a whole lot different than a 7 ultra mag

I've owned both and loaded for both and for me the 6.5 CM is the round. It is as people say inherently more accurate and it has been a lot easier to load for.

7 CM? Really? Will you use a 7-08 case? Now that'd be something to look at!

moore likely to use a 6.5CM case and neck it up

the 7-08 case would need too much modification...

I'd pick the 6.5, but only because I've already had a 7mm-08.

Can't go wrong, either way.

Kind regards, charlesb

I run a 7mm (although an AI version) and I'm more than pleased. The 162gr Amax are great performers on steel and game.
