Hey guys I'm new to the forum. I've been duck hunting 2 years (18 years old). Dad and I just recently began restoring grandpa's old boat to duck hunt on some east Texas lakes. I'm new to public lake hunting and could use some tips for what to expect and how to hunt on these lakes. I've got the basic gear I need and I want dad to have a good hunt to get into the sport. Won't say any names (since that's apparently HEAVILY frowned upon) but if you PM me I'll talk about specifics. Thanks for helping a rookie out!

If you can find private lands surrounding Lubbock it's pretty good for me so far. I killed my first sandhill a few days ago on a playa pond. There are a few public places near Lockney that hold ducks but they're real pressured. I've killed mainly teal with a few shovelers and mallards thrown in there. Do you know much about hunting lakes in East Texas?

I've seen more cranes and ducks than I have geese but I also only hunt playa ponds and tanks, not fields. Tons of sandhills so far.

You'll have to commit to more scouting trips than successful hunting trips. Public in east texas can be crowded when you dont expect it to be, and clear on a saturday morning. Find an area that you want to hunt, get in there the day beofre and watch. If you find an x then hunt it the next day. If they aren't there, move on. depending on the fronts, the lakes in east tx can be covered in roost birds. You may see thousands a LST and they fly for 10 minutes or so. Big spreads of divers will land you your limit of redheads and cans typically. juist go find them and set up, theyll be back daily.

Get some coot decoys to add to your spread. We've been seeing lots of ducks gathering amongst large groups of coots. Plus you'll have some live coots come in and add motion to the spread without additional effort. Dumbest birds ever.

Wait until the splits over to hunt
Arise.Kill.Eat -Acts 10:13 I have read a bunch of stuff on the internet about Star Wars but that does not mean I can skin a deer with a light saber.
