What is a fair daily rate for a contract type quail guide that provides his/her dogs? Lodging included on ranch.

Thanks BOBO. Rate really depends on number of hunters, number of days out, etc. let me know what you have in mind.

10 yrs ago I charged $450 a day. I also charged a for driving to your ranch. Usually $250 depending on how far. I had a 2 day minimum. I worked everyday and never had a shortage of clients wanting my service.

Was in south Texas just last week. Guides down there range 800-and up depending on what you want. All depends on how many trucks for your group. It seems to Texans that you need the big rig to go. All saw them do was put the clients on the same 200 acres out of a 6000 acre lease, afraid of getting stuck. They have had a lot of rain. 2 days they went over the same ground 4 birds being pointed from a covey you broke up earlier on hunt is not another covey. Keep it small and light cover new ground all day long. Covey goes left then you go right. Right into new covey. Been chasing birds in Texas 20 years, I've never gone to the singles supermarket. My worst day has been 6 coveys. Best half day was 38. Only killing one bird for the dog that needed it.
BIRDDOGS FOR HIRE. Will guide you on your ranch in south or west Texas. Getting ground to guide you on if you don't have lease. Still working to find quality ranch with birds to give an abundance of shooting for your enjoyment. CLASS DOGS/CLASS HUNT

Wee got the International Scout stuck, walked out and got the rancher's brand new Ford pickup, got that stuck, came back to camp and got a John Deere tractor, bent the axel on the pickup, and got the tractor stuck. They got all the equipment out in the spring. That's the good thing about hunting from a UTV. It will stay on top when the hunting trucks go down.

Uh, don't try to tell me you can't bury a UTV..I am ashamed to admit I've done it several times...in the same week!
BTW: Hey Sandflat, I was sitting at a table in Falfurrias at lunch a few days ago when you came over and introduced yourself! I am the little short fat guy in the blaze orange hunting cap. Most guys I know seem to try a little harder than what you described in your post, otherwise, the word gets out, and business evaporates.
Good luck to you!

We walked 3 miles out and left the mule overnight once, then carried a high lift jack back in the next morning to get it out. We now carry a high lift jack, some pieces of aluminum flat plate and a shovel with us everywhere we go. Have had to use them too.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Your pictures of that misadventure looked like pictures from the song Big Bad John. "With jacks and hammers they started back down."

Good to know that hard working folks are still out there. I never implied that you can't get UTV's stuck it is just less often. As far as ground coverage I was only talking about one instance. Didn't mean to ruffle yer feathers. I think we need to hunt together. Your operation was NOT one that was in question. Most guides and quail hunters will make the best of the situation. After all if we sit in front of the TV nothing ever happens. Time just passes you by. If you haven't been stuck you haven't been hunting. The Big Riggs are Fun to hunt from. Everything has its place. See ya soon
