Went to HEB to do some grocery shopping with my wife yesterday. We got in the door and I saw a ammo/reloading magazine sitting on a rack so picked it up for some light reading. There was a long article about 270 and how it was one of the original "long range" calibers but is loosing favor due to its lack of twist and therefore lack of higher bc bullets.
Then the bit that caught my eye. They had two sets of load data, that for a 22 or 24 inch barrel and some from a 26 inch barrel(my 270 has a 26 inch barrel) They showed 3 150 grain loads that were 3,000 fps+. Never seen any data for a 26 inch barrel before was interesting to read. I know that barrel length is uncommon with most 270's but apparently there are a few out there.

Take a look at your reloading manuals, lots of companies use 26 inch barrels for their data even though very few factory rifles use barrels of that length.

Think most I looked at show a 24. This article listed 2 sets of data one in a 24 inch barrel and the other out of a 26 inch ruger No. 1.
I still need to get a chronograph!

They showed 3 150 grain loads that were 3,000 fps+. Man, that is getting awful close to 7 Mag territory (I'm loading to ~3200 with a 150gr Partition)

Nosler usually uses longer barrels and they are match barrels at that. Sierra and Hornady seem to use production firearms.

If we could get bullet manufacurers to make a heavier high BC .277, and barrel makers to make the twist to go with it, the 270 would get new life breathed into it.

The 270 is what I learned to shoot long range on. I've loaded some of the 165 Matrix bullets running 2860 fps with the standard 1:10" twist. The groups were very good, and makes the 270 a very good long range round with this bullet. The Berger 150 VLD is no slouch either.

Chad, what length barrel are you running that you used with those 165 grain loads?

It was either a 24" or 26" barrel.
