I recently purchased a JC Higgins Model 51. It has a FN made in Belgium stamped on the left side of the action. A little research on the web shows it to be a FN Mauser 98 large ring action made 1950-55. I appears to be all original except butt plate. Do you know of any problems with these? Heard May need trigger replaced. Any danger in using reloaded ammo?

You have a real jem of a rifle. I have one and it is very accurate. Does exceptionally well with both factory and reloaded ammo. I have not had any issues with the trigger but you can certainly replace the trigger with a Tinmey, Bold or other trigger. What caliber is it. Mine is .270.

That's a quality rifle. The only reason to change the trigger is to lighten it, if you wish.

I was thinking about replacing the stock but the I look at it it's in pretty good shape, has some nice checkering and wood. It only needs the butt plate replaced as some one replaced it with a padded one that does fit the stock.

This isn't a gun to put a tacticool synthetic stock on...keep that to the modern guns! Heck I would trade you a rem 700 barrelled action if that's the route you are thinking.

The factory trigger can be worked over to lighten. As far as I am concerned the Mauser and it's variants are cream of the crop. No danger in shooting modern ammo.

As long as the condition of the rifle is good, there's nothing to worry about. 98 actions are some of the strongest actions made. FN made some of the best Mausers ever; to Mauser Oberndorf, CZ, Zastava, and Husqvarna are all great as well.

Aren't they the strongest action ever made?

I agree TDK, I think I'll try to find a butt plate that's close to original and leave it as is.

Its a great action.

I don't know about the triggers on these older guns but the ones I've messed with came with adjustable triggers. The one on a 798 I had wasn't great, but acceptable. I have an Interarms Mark X that adjusts beautifully. I guess it may be hit and miss.

I have a commercial FN in 30-06. It's a well built rifle that shoots as accurate as any sporter rifle I've ever seen. Mine wears a Timney trigger and breaks at 2lbs.

I have a J.C Higgins (commercial FN Mauser) in .270 Win. Got an adjustable Bold trigger in it, very accurate and dependable rifle.

Night and days ahead of the factory trigger. You have options depending on model to use a safety on the shroud or next to the trigger.

Here's my FN Commercial Mauser (Not JC Higgins) in .257 Roberts
Shoots great with the vintage Lyman Challenger fixed scope on it.

I've got that exact rifle (fancy, light wood and all) in .270 Win!

I picked up a new butt pad for mine. Need to get it on and fitted then take it to the range and put a few rounds thru it..

Nice rifle. That is what a sporter should look like!

Me too. Mine is in 30-06 and still wears the horn butt plate. It's not a lot of fun to put several rounds through off the bench.
