We took one of our good friends/co-worker to our lease near Junction for his 1st hunt ever. He shared with me that he wanted to get an axis buck and wanted one that he could mount if possible. So, I hunted with him where we have been seeing the most axis deer. On the 2nd day of our hunt he connected with this trophy axis which measured 35" and had terrific mass throughout his length.
He was using his brother's .308 and made the shot from about 100-110 yards. He thought he had missed because the buck ran off and showed no apparent signs of being hit. We followed the path we saw the deer exit into the brush and found him about 50 yards from where he was standing. Needless to say, a few high fives were shared and a huge sigh of relief for our 1st time deer hunter who thought for sure he had missed. He made a great shot on a trophy animal. It was a great experience to share this with a good friend and 1st time hunter.
