Looking to purchase a nice rifle for the above game. Wanting to hear some opinions on calibers.

I have a safe full of sub .30 rifles. Looking for something for larger game without being overkill.

Thinking in the 300 win mag range.

Lets hear some preferences.

Lots of cartridges will work for the list. The one you are looking at is a good one as are any or the other 30cal magnums. Don't count out the 8mms, 338 Win which are big for whitetail IMO but sure would work and if a handloader you can load them down for those.

Even the 30-06 and its larger siblings 338-06 and 35 Whelen or 350 Remington Mag are good choices.

Any major upside to the 300 WSM versus regular 300 ?

Nope.

Doesn't make the same velocity, harder to make it shoot, brass is less plentiful. And for what? Fraction of an inch of shorter bolt stroke?

Kind of what I thought. Wasn't sure if I was missing something.

Too bad they sold a ton of guns chambered in that caliber before they figured that out

Bingo, Better specify what bear. The TV show we sponsor we had been doing 7 mags but up in BC on grizzly the guide would not even let them point at a bear with a 7, was their policy. so to be safe 300 win

Stupid policy.

He should ask "what bullet is the 7 shooting?"

I agree completely. No grizzly will ever know the difference between a 7 mag and a .300 mag, assuming similar bullets are used. And...you could make an argument that the average Joe Nimrod can shoot a big seven better than he can a .300, thus putting the bullet in the right spot.

Guides and outfitters are only human too, and they all have their prejudices, just as we do here on the THF. It may be easier just to follow the guide's recommendation than to argue. My favorite black bear outfitter in SE Alaska insists that his hunters shoot nothing smaller than a .338WM, and when one in our party of four brought along his .30-06, I thought the guide was going to blow a gasket. And guess what? The old Springfield did the job just as cleanly as the big magnums!

Would be awesome to see someone show up with reduced recoil 300's and another guy with a 190 gr. 7 and not be able to use it.

I had a guy tell me a 6.5 creed isn't the best for a Aoudad and that he recommends using his 708. Shake my head and walk away, im not going to argue or listen over 20 grains of bullet

Right.

7mm 180 gr. VLD 3000 fps MV

Ft/lbs.
100 yards 3278
200 yards 2971
300 yards 2686
400 yards 2423
500 yards 2181
Skip out to a grand and it shows up with 1237 ft/lbs.

Is that enough gun?
