Well, maybe not the latest, which is pretty much the point.

Today, at the range, the magazine of my Remington 541-S fell apart. I had had some feeding problems with the mag, but figured it was no big deal to pick up another. Well, I did some research on the web and discovered that the magazines are a known issue and **everyone** hates them. Even worse, there used to be two models the 5 round and 10 round version. Both were plastic, but the 5 rounder was known to be more reliable for whatever reason. Naturally, the 5 round mags were discontinued, and now only the 10 round version is available. There is nothing else to be done, so I'm going to buy two of the plastic 10 round mags.

My point is this: everyone knows these mags are awful. The Remington 541-S is a **nice** rifle. How can they cripple an excellent product with grossly unsatisfactory parts? Even worse, this issue has been known for years and years, and Remington has done **nothing** about it. I've never been a Remington hater, and I've stayed out of all the trigger threads, etc., but this falls squarely into the same category. If you can't make a safe trigger and a functional magazine, maybe you're better off making Barbies or Super Soakers.

Someone needs to knock on their door to see whether there's anyone home at corporate.

One more reason I will never buy another Remy, I have a 22-250 I bought in 97, shot it only 4 times and the bolt handle fell off, they make trash now and for sometime IMO.

How old is your 541? I thought they discontinued it a long time ago.

I think there are companies that will make metal ones. I thought it was outback but I'll keep searching

Lack of QC is an all too common issue with Big Green Remington. I have bought my last new Remington. Now if a good deal comes around on a 788 or old model 552 speedmaster I might go for one of those but new ones No Thanks

Here's a fix using steel magazines for a 511. http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=41383

Every brand has issues. Not sure Remingtons are any different than any other brand I have ever bought.

I've emailed outback and am crossing my fingers.

I agree that all brands have their issues, but a .22 rifle magazine is hardly uncharted territory, especially for big Green; they've been making them for what, over 100 years? My point is that they refuse to acknowledge / fix the problem. I'm not mad about the mistake. I'm mad that they don't release a fix in a timely manner. I'm not sure about the year on my 541-S, but it's hardly ancient and I've seen NIB models for sale; the mag is also the same size as the 581 and the 77, so the problem is across multiple models.

This isn't some esoteric problem experienced by a few. This is obvious lameness experienced by many.

My 2010 Toyota Tacoma has a lot more plastic in it than my old 98 model. They've got to cut costs somewhere.

That peice looks like a lug on a breaker box. I wonder if that's where that part originated

The 541s are excellent rifles and it's a shame Remington didn't design a good metal magazine. A flush fit to the stock would have been a nice touch also.

I understand that mags for the 66 will fit the 541s. Or was it another model...CRS! I think a very minor mod to these substitute mags is needed but I couldn't yell you exactly what it is. I'm pretty sure the info is readily available over at Rimfirecentral.

I have another fail on Remy

My FIL got a new rifle chambered in 270 for a retirement gift. This was one of the high end 700's. Blue marble stock all stainless.

Upon arrival he noticed the safety would not hold safe. He sent back and the turn around was about 3.5 months. STRIKE ONE!

He finally received it back and the trigger assembly seem to work properly.

Took it to the range and couldn't get a group at 100yards with factory 130gr loads. Reloaded several different round to see if it like one better than the other. He decided to shoot through paper at about 40 yards and the bullet was tumbling and striking the paper side ways. Sent back to Remy for a repair...thinking the barrel has problems or something simple.

Last week got shipping confirmation on his repaired rifle. Upon arrival and inspection of the repair slip, the remarks were that the action and barrel were chambered in 280 but stamped 270! STRIKE TWO.

I will only buy older Remington stuff from now on...if this had been a 270 stamped 280, this could have been fatal!

His rifle was better than a .270, it's just that no one knew it. grin

After they moved and re-tooled I've heard good things about them. I have a gunsmith friend that says the new 700 actions he's been using on his custom builds have been as true right out of the box as any custom action that he's ever seen. He told me they are true within .0002 -.0003.
