How heavy is factory ammo loaded? Was reading the data on a box of 243 win 100 grain power points and it says 2960 muzzle velocity. Checked the hodgdon load data online and there were only 3-4 loads at max. that will beat this velocity. Are the factory loads made that heavy or is the data box accurate?

The speeds listed on the side of the box will get you in the ball park, generally. Most factory ammo is loaded on the medium side to near max velocity. Also, most factory ammo is loaded using faster burning powder to shoot well in a variety of rifles. As a reloader, you can get aggressive with the powder and use a slower burn rate powder and tune the ammo to YOUR rifle. You will also get higher speeds than factory ammo. In a 243 Win, a 105 Berger Hybrid usually runs about 2950 on the slow side, and as high as 3150 fps. Most run the 105's about 3050 fps. So, yes, you can get higher speeds that the 2960 listed. Some common powders are H4350, H4831 and H1000.

Some do some don't. The best way to know for your rifle is to run them across a chronograph. Lots of factory ammo is tested in barrels that are 26 inches and minimum internal barrel dimensions which makes them seem inflated to us that shoot shorter barrels with larger than minimum dimensions.
Never know for sure though without testing. Have one factory rifle that routinely runs 200+ fps above what is on the box and another that is over 250fps less.

Just a couple weeks ago, I chronographed some Remington 100 gr Corelocks in .243. They averaged around 2750 fps, about 200 fps slower than advertised. This is about par for the course.
Truth in advertising seems to be lost on most factory ammo manufacturers. The only factory load that has ever been honest for me was some Hornady super performance in 225 gr .338 WM which actually chrono'ed above advertised velocity.
When hand loaders work a load up to factory velocity, we are likely going to exceed real world factory results.

Then again, the manufacturers probably base their FPS figures on unusually long test barrels.
I've not seen a box of factory ammo list the length of their test barrel next to their claimed speed.

How much difference in speed from 24 inch to 22 inch. When I cut my .375 H&H down from 24 to 22 inches to make it more useful, I lost 65 fps with my favorite 300 gr load. Most riflemen will report similar velocity losses, say 25 to 50 fps per inch depending on the gun and the cartridge.

I chrono'd some from two boxes of Remington Corelokt, .308 150gr which are supposed to be 2820. Had two over that, one at 2843 and one at 2832. Average for all ~15 or so shots was 2740 out of a 26" barrel. Now either my chrono is slow, my gun shoots slow, or factory numbers are fudged pretty heavily.

An uncle of mine ran a couple boxes of 130 grain Remington coreloct factory ammo through a chrono and got around 2600 fps avg.
