The buck in the video actually caught me off guard, I was leaving the spot I was hid when I saw him coming in, and I just laid flat on the ground, grabbed my phone and started recording. That was the third buck I'd rattled in that morning, the others were dinks. I've had great luck rattling, in 2010 I spent the weekend before, and Thanksgiving week at the lease (was single then) and that one week rattled in 17, what I believe we're different bucks. Of course, that was 17 bucks in probably 50 or 60 setups. I like to sit in the stand until around 7:30 or 8 and then sneak out and rattle until noon.

They are absolutely mindless with anger if you catch them right.
Was in a tightly managed ranch in S Texas looking for a mgmt buck that was the dominant deer in a particular area once. He was very hard to see during daylight hours and vanished during hunting season, but had been caught on camera running any buck in the area off, so we figured rattling might lure him out.
He didn't show, but another big buck did and boy was he pissed off. Came out of the brush, paused when he saw the top drive and out of curiosity I hit the horns again. Dang thing bull rushed the Suburban and actually hit it. A few seconds later, a yearling spike comes out of the brush and he takes off after it. I'd say 50-50 that spike was dead shortly thereafter. Buck was furiously pissed off and just wanted to fight anyone.
Made me think twice about rattling from the ground.

That is awesome. HUGE neck. I've rattled up a spike to within 10 yards once. That dude bee-lined straight for the rattling.

Great video. That was a cool experience.
I've never had much success rattling in the Hill Co. but maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Anybody want to share their basic technique? How long do you stay in one spot? How long do you rattle and how long do you pause? Are you just tickling the horns or going full out? Do you have the best results in pre-rut or right in the thick of tending/breeding?

Do you have the best results in pre-rut or right in the thick of tending/breeding? I'll try to find an opening, or clearing near some heavy cover with the wind in my favor. I go all out, hit'em hard, scrape the trees, pound the ground, kick rocks, whatever I can do to simulate a real fight. I'll usually setup, wait for a couple minutes then start. I'll rattle for aprox. 3 mins. then wait 5 then do it again. I do this 3 times then move on to the next spot. Watch you back, a lot of bucks will circle behind you to get the wind in their favor and a lot of times you won't know there's a buck around until you move and spook them. It's a blast when they come in!! Good luck.

Yeah, don't listen to me. I'm just an idiot.
Lol. Duckbill that was funny! The dude up top has already taken lots of bone before this deer, both mule and whitetail.

One time I was rattling for my friend Tracy. He didn't have a good buck on the ground and I knew about where a good 10 was. I told him when I say shoot, shoot him. Sure enough he gets about 15 yards from us and pops out. I say shoot him and he says I want to see him from the side. I say you are fixin' to. Sure enough he caught movement or smell and turned and left. Tracy shot and I was watching for impact. The deer ran up the side of the hill and got away. Tracy ran after him and I walked over to a mesquite limb I saw fold over. Folded it back up and saw a perfect bullet hole through it. I sawed that limb off and walked back to the truck and put it in the back of the truck. Here comes Tracy mad he didn't get him. I said I told you to shoot him. He said I know. We get back to camp and of course everyone heard the shot and came to see what we got. I drug the 1 inch limb out of the bed of the truck and said here he is. I folded the limb back together and Tracy said you let me run all over that hill and you knew I hit this limb. We all had a huge laugh. One of the guys mounted that limb over Tracy's camper door. More laughs followed. Good times!

I promised the ranch owner I wouldn't give location on anything I posted. If you're west of the metromess you better get after it. We had bucks locked in on does and were stupid in love!!

Do you have the best results in pre-rut or right in the thick of tending/breeding? I've rattled a lot in the hill country. The problem in the hill country is that in many areas the buck to doe ratio in way out of whack. The big boys don't have to fight for doe. You usually end up rattling in all the young bucks. ( In my experience) You want to be able to see. I like to get up on a high spot in some brush with some open area around me or at least some shooting lanes. I'll hit the grunt a few times, go to town on a near by tree then hit the horns hard to start. You'll kinda of just get a feel for it. Think about bucks you've seen fighting in the past. I don't rattle for long. I'm guessing probably just a few minutes at a time for a few times. I'll move when I think that any deer close enough to hear me would have come in by now.
