1st time I ever recall seeing this happen. About a moth ago, my oaks dropped tons of small acorns, one of the heaviest acorn falls I have seen here, but very small ones. I have noticed in the past 2-3 days more acorns falling , these are a bit larger and look very good when cracked. I saw deer in the back yard feeding and it was on these "new" acorns.

I have never seen this happen, but will try to look at the individual trees today, to see if there is a difference in Oak tree type. Sure wont help feeder hunting around here!

Interested in what you will find. On my place in Eastland county only the few live oaks had a crop this year and they dropped late for them. Drought at our place was bad enough in the Spring that acorns did not set well on the post oaks. Leaves on the post oaks were tiny at the beginning of June due to lack of water, with almost no acorns being set on the trees.

kmon, I have 4 types of oaks, haven't been up to check the Live oaks, or Red oaks yet. So far it has to be the Blackjacks and Post oaks. Actually It has to be the post oaks, they shed heavy here at the house a month back, but now dropping a longer, darker acorn.??

Oaks will sometimes prematurely drop some of their acorns, especially when stressed in a heavy mast year, so that they can be sure to get some of them to maturity. If a year started wet and then became dry it's likely to happen.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

So far it i the Post oaks.

This photo shows the acorns from a mont ago that the deer don't get up at the house.

These are the really nice ones falling now, not as thick, but you can see from the 2 I opened, they are healthy.

The pin and live oaks have dropped most of theirs already. My red is shedding like crazy right now. The red oak has more Tannic acid so they are a little more bitter but the deer will eat them if the rest are gone.

It's raining acorns at my house in Cypress. They're falling faster than the leaves.

Was looking at a live oak this a.m. that is still loaded with them. Thought all the 35mph winds the last 2 weeks would have knocked them off by now.

Banner year for acorns at my lease. Deer haven't cared a whole lot for corn. The deer that do come to the feeders never stay very long.

It is still raining acorns in Leon county today. I watched a doe walk right to one of my corn piles and kept on walking. She had no interest in corn
