My kid thinks he needs an AR, well I think he does too who doesn't? I've never built one so searching around for the cheapest parts and assembling them is prolly out. Who has the best deal on one around Arlington?

Try GT Distributors in Dallas, then compare online, usually very competitive.

I put one together for about $520 all of the parts off slick guns.com. PSA upper and lower the lower was a blemish that I never noticed. If you find the right deals it can be done pretty cheap.

PSA and Bravo Company is pretty much the only places I get parts from. Like Killer said I have built them for under $600. The most recent one I built for about $900 but it had a lot of high end parts. Be patient and wait for the deals and you'll save a ton of money.

Depending on what you want, I've seen some as low as 400 complete. That's a carbon lower which I'm not a fan of but you said cheap and there it is.

Was just at Walmart and they have a Bushmaster for $634, that seems cheap to me. Is this a good deal?

It was 20% off at Walmart a week ago for Black Friday. But yeah, still sounds like a good price.

Grab a gun in Coppell has The S&W MP15's for $549 with a magpul rear sight. And they have a Christmas deal on bushmasters for $569 after some mail in rebate. Good blank canvas guns that you can add whatever you want to.

So let's say I was going to try to put together an AR on a budget. Where would I start (parts, kits, etc...)? Is there anything to avoid? It would be used mostly for target shooting and hog eradication.

Just my 2 cents, but I would buy the stripped lower, BCG, lower parts kit, and barrel new. After that, I would get on ar15.com's equipment exchange and buy everything else used. I did that recently and built a very high quality 300 blackout and saved a ton of money. With a good mix of mid and high end parts (BCM BCG, Magpul stock, Daniel Defense rail, Ranier Arms barrel, Geissele trigger, etc.) the total cost of the rifle came in at about $900. If you went with budget to mid quality parts, you could definitely build one for under $700.
