So I was putting on a new scope and decided to lap the rings. Been lucky with rings not marking most of the scopes in the past but decided it was time to start. Don't want any weak links; ounce of prevention I guess. Anyway, I had a question for those who do lap their rings.
I lapped the rings like the videos show on youtube. Got a great even coverage on the bottom half of the rings. But on the tops of the rings, I couldn't get it more than maybe 50%-75%. Are the tops of the rings as important? I didn't want to tighten the tops down too much when lapping for fear of damaging the screws holding the base in place, or working it too much and making the rings too large for the scope. Ring alignment was perfect before I started lapping. So is it OK to still have some black on the upper half of the rings?
Also, say I move a scope and the lapped rings to another rifle, both having picatinny rail bases. Do I need to mount the rings and lap them again or can I just move the rings and scope as one piece and be good to go? I assume the second one, but thought I'd ask to be sure. Would it matter if they were 2 piece bases?
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

If You move them you'll need to check alignment and you may have to lap them again
