Congrats. Haven't taken a muley yet but would love to.

I honestly expected him to drop like he had been hit by lightning after hearing all the exploits of the .257 wby mag

Especially after the second shot.

I watched a mule deer kill vid last night and the deer took two well placed shots and stayed on his feet until he rolled several seconds after taking the second shot

Maybe they are just a tougher animal than a whitetail ?

They are bigger so im sure a little tuffer. If your first shot wasn't the best that can go a long way. Botch the first shot on a trapped hog and seems like nothing short of complete annihilation will stop them, gets the adrenaline flowing.

He dressed 170 lbs which is in line with our south Texas bucks

The first shot, even though deflected, was going to have been fatal. He took it like it was nothing.

Never seen a whitetail take a hit like that and not make a full out bolt.

This guy soaked it up almost like "come on, is that all you got?"

cheers Congrats on your Trans-Pecos Mule Deer buck. Really great recap of the hunt also. No better way to kill a buck than to do a spot and stalk on a buck in that terrain.
Here are a couple of pics of the location we glassed from. This pic was taken about 800 yards away. I was sitting in the Ranger watching this all go down thru my binos and spotting scope. When txtrophy85 was down in the creek bottom the buck started to walk and feed rapidly to the north. I was afraid he was not going to be able to see the buck move off. I watched txtrophy85 stalk out of the drainage and the buck had him pinned for a short time. I seen the buck start to trot off and I said to myself "you better get on him quick cause he is not going to stay around much longer". I was watching the buck as he stopped and looked back at txtrophy85 when I saw what I though was hair fly followed by the buck reacting to being hit then trotting off! I then heard the rifle shot and thump of the bullet hitting. Same thing when I saw the buck go down then heard the shot. I saw the buck go down but heard a 3rd shot so I knew the buck was down for good.
Here is what the location looked like. The buck was bedded just to the left of the orange colored tree and back about 100 yards just at the end of the white gravel point. The taller gray trees are along the creek channel and it was thick and deep.

A couple of more pics of one happy hunter.

cheers I enjoyed hunting with you and showing you a little of the ranch. I really enjoyed your enthusiasm and preparation for the hunt you took on. When I first got on this lease I was the same way you were this first year. It was truly enjoyable to hunt with you and be a part of this hunt. The 2.5 days it took to finally get a shot at this buck is only a small part of the actual hunt experience that you had. Seems like the 2 new hunters were the only successful hunters this year on the lease. up

Good stuff there. That's a heck of a Trans Pecos buck for your first one txtrophy85, actually that's a heck of a buck period.
I've been chasing them for 25 yrs down there. Took one week before last but he's not near as good as yours.
Congrats!

Bill
