is 2" Sch 40 heavy enough for barb wire feeder fence corners - plus any helpful hints on fences #5428763 11/18/14 05:03 PM

Main question - will 2" (2 3/8" OD) Schedule 40 pipe work for corners (for feeder fences) w/o additional bracing. Tried T's, and even with anchors they bent too much.

Second Question - any helpful hints to safe time and money on feeder and food plot fences.
---
Ok, back story. My current temporary fences are toast. Survey crew mulched the food plot fence (ripping out all the wires), and a tree fell on my feeder fence (which was impossible to tighten anyway - so hardly worked). Planning major repair to existing fences and adding several new pens and food plots. Thinking of getting a pneumatic T-post driver (mansaver), and trying to adapt it to drive a few 2" Schedule 40 pipes for the feeder fence corners (unbraced). I am in the process of trying to get my tractor running again - but need a fence before I plant anyway.

T-posts and panels. Save time and spend a little bit of money....but I can't afford to let you use my helper.

Yes it's fine as long as you do kickers and don't hang a gate on it. 2" ID sd40 is usually what I build gates out of. Not the cheapest corner post material but will work. It's also going to be short post being most is 21' lengths

Not sure you want to drive it though

Disregard the above I was being stupid I use 1 1/4 for gates. 2 3/8 od is fine, just make sure you build kickers and h braces for corned and you will be fine

My land, so only going to move them if I want to (panels are more portable). I like shooting corn fed pigs, so am not trying to pig proof.

In theory I could run a raised panel for the pigs-so will keep it under consideration. Also could make it a trap with panels - but climbers would destroy it if I used T posts. I am leasing my back 80, and the lessor cleaned up my panel trap (lots of wood posts in that one). Funny, have not seen a pig yet this year.

Local fence shop sells the pipe for fence posts. They have Galvanized 7', 8', 10.5' and 24' lengths. I suspect they are on the thin side for Sch 40 though, as they are a little cheaper than the metal supply I have been using lately ($64 for 24' versus $63 fpr 20').

I ordered the Mansaver today. I messed up the online order and ended up speaking with an nice, helpful, actual live person. I had attempted to ordered the round pipe sleeve and was planning on getting a better welder than myself to make a custom adapter for the 2" ID pipe. They make that custom adapter in house, and could probably get it fabricated and shipped by tomorrow. It is nice to do business with US company.

I might be able to get the pens up over Thanksgiving weekend.

I am imagining you did a dead man brace

But I can imagine a floating brace as well (I don't like this picture, other pictures have shown the tensionning wire to be notched into the brace, parallel to the bottom strand).

I am not sure what is refered to as a kicker, but I am imagining guide external guide wire wires to an anchor (which will be a good trip wire to kick...

Doubt he did the "dead-man" brace, a standard "H" brace is more common and much stronger, can be made out of almost any durable pipe/post, even RR ties or telephone pole post.. An "H" brace is configured just like the shape of an "H".

Can't you buy either some used 2 3/8 or 2 7/8 drilling pipe? That's what we use and it doesn't cost $3 a foot. 2 7/8, especially if you bought thickwall, wouldn't bend if you tried even without bracing (on a fence that short in length).

Yes, just watch out if you buy drill stem pipe because most of is you cant weld because it is so magnetised .

Your luck must be worse than mine, most of the pipe I have used is fine, ones with the plastic liners suck for torch cutting though! Sucker rod on the other hand is magnetized allot from what I have gotten. I did get one truck load of pipe that had a high % of magnetized pipe though, but that wasn't the norm for me. I was still able to weld it though on AC, just not as "purdy". The bury in dirt trick didn't work either!

BTW, also had fair luck wrapping the ground around the magnetized pipe and stayed on DC

T posts and hog panels work great. If U use the 2" pipe on the corners I'd brace them.

Just build a round pen with panels. Easy and no corners.
