I bought a .257 weatherby mag last year and have not purchased any ammo for it yet. Mostly because there is none here locally that I can find. I was given a $250 Bass Pro Shops gift card and thought I might order some with that. The only grain they have is 100. All I plan to hunt with the .257 is whitetail and maybe an occasional mule deer. Will I be happy with the 100 grain or do I need to get bigger? Thanks for any input.

I shoot 100's in mine, and it shoots them well, both factory and reloads. Go look in the photo section for a big 11 point that a Forum members wife shot, with 110 Grain bullet out of a .257 WBY, blew a huge hole in his shoulder!

Also I need to get a scope for it. I could use some of that gift card on a scope and get ammo elsewhere. If I go with a silver one my choices from them are either a Leupold VX-2 in a 3-9x40 or a Nikon Pro Staff 5 in a 3.5-14x40. The price difference in the 2 scopes is only $30. Which scope would you get or would you get a black one? Thanks.

You're better off finding out yourself what the gun likes. It could go well.m maybe not. This is what made me trade mine because I couldn't find factory ammo that would settle down and shoot good groups. Maybe talk to Chad.

Baily's on Butternut should have the ammo. If not they can get it.

Don't think you could go wrong with either scope, but if you do go with the Silver, be sure to use black base and rings, looks pretty good!

I wouldn't do silver. It never matches and looks like trash to me. That rifle deserves a Zeiss Terra or better.
I used Weatherby Nosler Partitions in mine but can't remember the grain. 110 I think.

If your on a budget I would go with a 4x12 buckmaster from Cabelas shipped to your door for 149 dollars. I would put it in some DNZ game reaper mounts for $60. A good clear set up for around $200 and don't have to leave the house.

If you have some coin to spend can't go wrong with a VX III 4.5x14 LR 30mm from Leupold $600-$700 plus the same game reaper mounts, or step up and get a set of one pice nightforce mounts for around $200. That will tear up a $1000

Or, get a Swarovski. Z6 in night force mounts and tear up $3000...what ever your pocketbook and heart desires.

I bought my first deer rifle 25 years ago at B&B pawn, they use to have a ton of different ammo

Let me suggest a few loads:

This always shot good for factory in my wife's R93 Blaser

Top notch stuff:

Not a bad way to get brass to reload:

Bass pro gift card:

http://t.basspro.com/DNZ-Products-Game-Reaper-OnePiece-Scope-Mounts/product/10207654/

2 boxes of loaded ammo

http://t.basspro.com/Weatherby-Centerfire-Ammo/product/18124/

Set of rCBS reloading dies

http://t.basspro.com/RCBS-Rifle-Die-Sets/product/10202589/

And a enough left over for a sling.

I just checked the Cabelas website, they sold out of the 4x12s for 149...All they have left is 3x9, might venture out and see if they have any left over at the store if you are close to one.

Thanks Ed. I ordered two boxes of the Nosler 110 grain AccuBonds from Midway USA. It was $20 off. Now I need to find a scope, would like to use the gift card from bass pro and some cash for it.

To be honest with you I don't know. I bought it a year ago and it has just been sitting in the safe.
