why 308...if you are going to buy ammo you could go other calibers...
personally i would go with 270 or 260/6.5 family
to answer your original question Remington 700 and look for a vortex viper or used pst As I predicted.

Im wanting to get a 308 bolt action for deer hunting. So far this year Ive used my AR15 223 and it has worked fine. Im just wanting a bigger caliber and a bolt action would be cheaper to get into then a 308 AR10. What do yall think are the best options in the $800 range, that is including glass. Im thinking Tikka, Remington, or the ever so evil Savage. Im definitely wanting a true SA not an Axis or Stevens 200 with the long SA. What do ya think? The reason Im saying 308 is the ammo availability of that caliber. Would probably get ammo from Chad on here. Shots from 50 to 300 max. What ya got?? I have a couple of 7mm08's that are Savage/ Stevens long action 110 models. The good thing about using long actions on the shorter cartridge is not having the OAL restrictions with the blind mag. If I was using the short action blind mag the OAL's on my reloads would be too long and would not fit in the mag.

CDNNSports.com had the Ruger American in .308 for $289 yesterday, either black or digital camo. Just sayin.

I have always shot Savage bolts, and they have all delivered 1" groups or better. Hard to beat a model 10/11for the money. You can get a model 11 package (synthetic stock) for under $500 at Buds.

Honestly, you could go get a savage 111 with a Nikon prostaff at academy for $499. It's really hard to beat that value for most Texas deer hunting.

Tikka or Savage, Rem 700 but plan on a $100 Timney trigger.
Vortex Viper Savage 110 and Vortex Viper. I'm a little partial to my Savage 10T and Vortex Viper PST.

So are the 110/111s true short actions?

So are the 110/111s true short actions? No, 110/111 are Savage's Long action models. Shorts actions are 10,11,12... .308 is a short action.

So are the 110/111s true short actions? To answer your question yes, Savages are true long/short actions. 10, 11, etc. -short; 110, 111, etc. long. They are great rifles.

I had a Savage model 16 (stainless) in .243 that was consistent about 1/2" five-shot groups at 100 yards. - I ordered it from the custom shop with a laminated thumb-hole stock and glass bedded it, but that was all I did to it.
Later I swapped out to a 7mm-08 barrel and after some load development, it did just as well with that.
You can pick up those thumb-hole stocks from Boyds stocks for around a hundred bucks or so.

Here's why I love my Savage. It has been the most accurate out of the box rifle I've ever had, beating my Weatherby's. This was with match ammo, factory accustock and accutrigger.

I am seeing pretty much just rave reviews on the Ruger American's accuracy, and it seems folks like the ergonomics of them too. Boyd's supposedly has a wooden stock for it available and that would eliminate one component that gets criticized. It sounds as though the trigger is one you can live with if you're not too picky.
Then there is the Savage. Their reputation is pretty hard to beat.
Whatever you do, don't put a cheap scope on the rifle. Some of these economy rifles like the Ruger and Savage deserve good optics, and I'll tell you that I have more than one rig where the scope cost more than the rifle. And don't go cheap on bases and rings either.

Mass produced rifle and mass produced ammo, impressive! I just dropped it into a H-S Precision stock, will be getting an adjustable LOP buttplate and cheek riser for it. The accustock did not like bipod a at all. I was never a Savage fan, bought this one because I had to not because I wanted too, and dang glad I did. The trigger is awesome
