I am in the market for a suppressor. A buddy of mine told me that if I don't have $1,000 to spend don't bother. I looked around online a bit and saw some suppressors for around $700.

My question is, is there a good suppressor I can buy for under $1,000? Are the less expensive ones junk?

Also, is there a way I could get 1 suppressor for a 6.5 CM and a .243 win?

Thanks for the help!

Get a YHM Phantom LT for $600 and tell your buddy he's an idiot. http://www.silencershop.com/shop/yhm-7-62-phantom-lt/

There are many many quality 30 caliber cans out there for less than $800 and very few over $1k.

If you get a 308 Win rated can, you can shoot it on anything smaller than 308 with about the same size case. So a 308 Win can you could shoot your 6.5CM and 243, or anything smaller (like a 223).

I just purchased a new one from Templar Tactical (Crux). I bought the Nemesis 30. It's a 6" titanium rated for 300 Win Mag +. I have seen several in action and they are very light and durable. The engineering inside the can is what's the most impressive. Price wise, the cheap one's are cheap for a reason.

The arguably best suppressor is also one of the cheapest, the AAC Cyclone. Price does not necessarily equal quality in the suppressor world. Price is dictated the most by material and attachment system. Thread on cans are the least expensive. Titanium are more expensive.

I have a $550 suppressor and a $900 suppressor. The cheaper one is quieter, stronger, more durable, but rather heavy. The expensive one is shorter, lighter, and slightly louder.

I would never pay over $1000 for a can, it just isn't necessary.

Does anyone have any feedback on the Bowers units?

I have a suppressor thats under 1000. Its pretty quiet and I can take it apart and clean it. Downside, its heavier than the 1000+ cans but I really dont mind. I mainly use mine for hunting and range time. I like not taking hearing protection to the stand these days. Deer and hogs have a hard time determining where the shot came from.

AAC are under a grand, and very durable. I had to deal with some ammo issues but loving it.

Go to SilencerShop.com It's literally a one stop shop for everything you need to know, reviews on silencers and what you need to do to purchase one. I recently ordered the YHM Phantom mentioned above and they were great and keep me updated on where we are in the process.

The cost of the silencer is one part of the equation. You'll need to set up a trust and the ATF stamp is $200 as well. So all in you could be in for about a grand.

Thanks for all the info, seeing those prices I am definitely buying one. If I get the YHM suppressor do I have to get the flash hider attachment? Just a little confused, does a gun smith install that or do they screw on the regular threads?

Also, I didn't know about the NFA trust so thanks for posting that. Is it necessary to get a lawyer for this?

If you get a YHM QD, you have to buy the muzzle brake also. The suppressor will come with one but you will need to buy addition brakes for your other guns you plan to use it on. It installs on any threaded barrel with a wrench. You can buy them in almost any thread pitch.

A trust is not necessary unless your can't get CLEO sign off. Even if you can get the signature I would recommend using a trust as it streamlines the process and allows for more than one person to have access to the items you buy.

A lawyer isn't required to draw up the trust but most recommend using one. I used Quicken Willmaker to draw up a trust but ended up using a lawyer to make our trust because my dad wasn't comfortable with the Quicken version. Put side by side the only difference is the leterhead. YMMV

Most lawyers that do NFA trusts charge about $300-400. That's a one time cost though. You also have a $200 tax stamp for each NFA item you purchase or build. You should figure those expenses into the cost. You also should consider your price point. With the amount of time and money spent to get into the NFA game, don't let a few hundred bucks keep you from getting what you really want. Are you rifles semi auto or bolt action? The type of mounting system is something to consider. I think the general consensus is thread on is more accurate but QD is easier to move from rifle to rifle. I have a Silencerco Saker 762 (still awaiting stamp) that will be used on all my AR's. I'm planning for either a thunderbeast or other precision can for my bolt guns. If going the QD route you've got to also consider the cost of addition muzzle mounts. For the saker they're about $80 each.

There's many benefits of the trust beyond the fingerprinting/chief Leo deal

Trust = 150 minimum
ATF Form 4 fee = 200

So add the out the door can price to this and your buddy is pretty close to what the first one will cost.

That assumes the guns you want this put on are already threaded and you don't need a gunsmith to do that. They are cool and super fun, you can shoot without earplugs. It isn't movie quiet but it is significantly quieter.

Thanks for the info!

The rifles are all bolt actions, going to be used for hunting.

If that's the case, look at the SilencerCo Harvester. It's rated up to 300WM and very lightweight.

Silencerco harvester would be great and will be the least expensive option most likely.

My advice if you are using it for hunting is to get a thread on, rather than QD. This will save you at least $50-90 per gun. Also, get a short, lightweight one. The difference in sound is not much in my experience.

I have a AAC Cyclone which is 23 oz and like 9". I also have a Thunderbeast 30-PS which is about 7" long and 13 oz. I can tell very, very little difference in sound on my bolt guns, but I can tell a big difference in weight and length hanging off the end of the barrel.

I can tell a bigger difference in sound on my AR's with the Cyclone being noticeably quieter for some reason. If I was getting another 30 cal can I would get a YHM phantom titanium, thread on.

Anyone do the NFA gun trust on Silencer Shop's website? I talked with my FFL and he has a Silencerco Harvester for sale for $650. He told me he has a lawyer he uses for the Gun Trusts but he charges $300. Doing it myself seems like a much cheaper option.

I used www.199trust.com for mine. Only took a few minutes to fill out the information and they had it back to me in less than a day and answered all of my questions promptly.

$79 all in.

The best all around can that I have is the SDN-6 or the SWR 762. Great cans and you can use them on several calibers. One thing to remember is when doing your FORM 4 it takes the same amount of time to get 3 or 4 cans approved as one can. I can promise you that once you buy one can then you will be hooked so get with a shop and get your list of cans to order. I nice 22 cal can is either the Spectre II or Sparrow.

When ordering suppressors always use a credible manufacturer so they will stand behind their products. I have seen some cans that are made by individuals that say they are good but truly are cracker jack wanna be's. Promise ya I have been there and done that so buy good solid cans in the beginning and you will thanks us later.

If you want to shoot some cans before buying just let me know.

Shhhhhhhh better to be quiet than remove all doubt..

ACC 762 SD on a budget or SDN-6 for a really good one...if you buy an ACC before the end of the year, they have a 200.00 rebate to offset the cost of the tax stamp. The whole transaction takes about 5min on suppressor shop.com (if you got the trust).
