We caught our first drake mallard working as a team yesterday. Mallards and pintails are the two most difficult waterfowl quarry in falconry, so I was very pleased he selected this drake. He came down through the flock and when this mallard tried to side slip him, he hit the wing and broke it, bringing the duck down. This was taken at the North American Falconer's Association annual meet being held this week in Lubbock.

How cool is that! How long does it take to train the bird?

I don't! A goose will whoop him and I might not have a falcon after the altercation. If he gets a goose down the goose will fight him and could break all his bones. Mallards are about the upper size limit for a bird of his size.

Some birds hunt in three weeks after capture (for wild birds) and some take a few months. Captive bred birds take a few months. He is a four year old captive gyrfalcon/peregrine hybrid.

Could you bird guys do a quail hunt? I have tried to do out reach to falconers and no success to date. Cool story and picture. Was this a wild Mallard or one you released?

It was a wild mallard. I wouldn't post a captive bird as released birds have none of the "moves" of wild quarry. My girlfriend has a bird that can catch quail, but it's tough. She flies a Harris Hawk. If you interested in it I have another friend whose bird loves quail.
