I saw this buck last year during the rut and let him walk. Then, I got a couple pics of him in October this year and decided he may not get a pass again if I was lucky enough to see him. I decided he'd be my primary target for this season.

The rut is kicking full bore right now, so I made a plan to hunt his part of the ranch. I picked a stand with good open views and good road to corn as the deer were ignoring feeders. The hunting was very slow Sunday and Monday, but Tuesday am I awoke to a heavy frost and temps right around freezing. Good sign. Sure enough, about 7:15 that morning I catch a glimpse a buck doing the rut trot through the brush about 150 yards out. I start watching the road where I expect him to pop out. As soon as he did I recognized him as the 10 I was after. But, now he was about 190 yards out and facing away from me so I made the tough decision not to take the shot. He was only there about a second before he was gone again, disappearing back in the brush. I wondered if I'd just missed my opportunity.

As the morning continued on, my head was on a swivel hoping he'd circle back. Sure enough, about 8:05 a doe pops out on the road corn, and he's trailing close behind. Soon he emerged broadside so I squeezed the trigger and dropped him. The doe took off at the shot, and to my surprise a second mature buck emerged right behind her! Never saw him! I guess he was hanging back waiting to see if the ten gave him a window of opportunity. All in all, it made for a fun morning, and always great to take a deer you have some history with.

Congrats on a fine buck, did the other buck look back and say thanks for taking him out.

First 8pt I shot in Texas was less than 15 yards trailing a doe. She spotted me getting the gun on him from the blind while he was rubbing on a tree about 5 feet from her. Shot the buck and she didn't even run off, just looked at the dead buck then at me as if to say thanks and walked off.

Great buck and some awesome photos, well done buddy!! I used to hunt on the Harlow ranch just outside of Llano during the late 1970's. Thanks for sharing. That buck will make a beautiful mount! Thanks for all the detail in the story, it's great when a plan comes together. Baker

Thank you kindly gents. I was grateful to have the chance to take him.

Also saw a couple youngsters from the next generation earlier in the trip.

Happy Thanksgiving THF.
