To get good enough to call ducks in. I've been practicing for probably close to a year, seems like i haven't gotten any better, and i've tried different calls ( double reeds & single ). Any advice and sorry i know this type of thread pops up a lot.

Buck Gardner did a series of videos that are on "calling all ducks" website. I feel like I've gotten better after watching that.

Although I don't call much, the call I reach for the most is the whistle.

Get out and call at em all until you start getting good reactions from them
Everyday is different on what they want to hear to bring em in to decoy them
Nothing can substitute watching their reactions

Learn how to blow a short reed goose call. It helps learn how to present the proper air into the call. The main thing is don't puff your cheeks out and try to present that hot air from your gut.

Just dont overcall. Ducks heard and seen everything all the way from canada. I prolly use the whistle, feedercall and tealcall 90% of the time.
Less is more. All these loud comeback call is all edited tv stuff or good for duck call competition.

Just used a whistle the first year and now in my 3rd year I'm using a RnT. Don't over think it, just do the simple stuff. I agree don't over call, I usually just hit them a little on the corners when they're working. Call to wring tips and tail feathers, if they are headed to me I don't call.

Get the RNT CDs. They are the best to learn from. The key is that you don't blow into the call but you use words. The force of those words like quit or hut and the vocals will produce the sound. A simple quack is saying the word quit just elongate it. Good luck.

My father and grandfather taught me at a very young age on an old hand me down P.S. OLT D-2 how to simply quack and chuckle. Grandpa told me to forget the long note hail calls and the aggressive comeback calls until you've achored down the basic quack and feeder chuckle. The basic quack and the feeder chuckle will kill you more ducks than all the 20-note highballs you can ever let out.
Find ducks and listen to them. Focus on listening to how the Hen Mallard sounds on the roost. Listen to them in the air when they are working your decoys. Remember those sounds and mimic them through the call.
The CD's and videos are really good tools to get you started- but the one's I've seen could easily frustrate someone because they teach you the basics on a custom tuned call they have. You'll very rarely get an out-of-the-box call that sounds like anything the pro's are using to show you on those videos.
The easiest calls to learn on, in my opinion only, would be the Haydel's DR85 paired with an MP90. With those two calls, used properly, ducks go feet down more often than not.
But you have to learn to make them sound ducky which means practicing in the truck on the way to and from work, practicing out in the field, and whenever else the folks within earshot will tolerate it. The important thing to remember is that you have to get it right before you can practice. That means all the crazy practice in the world won't help unless you are sounding like a duck. Learn the basic quack and the feeder chuckle first. Then after you are good with those try and work that quack into a 5-6 note descending comeback series. Doesn't have to be loud- a ducks lungs and diaphragm are a fraction of the size of a humans.
Tucka-tucka-tucka... Huuuuuth
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

Good advice on this thread. I call ok but this morning I had to put it down. They worked better without it.

I alsways reach for my whistle first. Maybe a few quacks here and there.

Some days you're a hero, others you're a zero.
Ducks don't respond to calls every single day.
Some days you can turn em with one single quack, some days they won't even look at you.

I bought my first call 20 years ago (Duck Commander) and I am still learning to read ducks and think like a bird. I still go to the city lake and listen and copy their habits.
