Saw three deer running across in front of me the other day and then a dog following hot on their tails. When the dog saw me he froze and took off the other direction.
About thirty minutes later I see a large brown dog run out on the opposite end of the pipeline and he then ran the entire length about 400 yards toward me. He was a large boxer with his tongue hanging out and he got within 50 feet of me and I hollered at him. He froze and looked at me and then I shouted again, GIT! and he took off toward the fence.
He didn't make any aggressive move or bark at me and looked in good shape and no collar and he didn't look like a stray. He knew he was in trouble when I yelled at him and didn't come back as I sat and watched deer and turkeys later until dark.
There are other hunters on the adjoining ranches that may not be as nice as I was!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Owner of our lease has 3 or 4 Great Pyrenees. They stay with the sheep or supposed to any way. We hear them running coyotes at night. They don't seem to bother the deer. Saw 17 on last hunt with two nice bucks. That was after dogs ran and bark all night

Several years ago I was in Arkansas where running the deer with dogs was still permitted. I had three smaller hounds run through and piss on the legs of the feeder before trotting off down the trail. They almost got fed some lead but I noticed all three had orange collars on. We were on private land so there shouldn't have been any dog hunters out there, but I also know that dogs don't understand the term "private property" so they got a one day pass. If I had seen them a second time in the next couple days, they would have taken a quick trip across the rainbow bridge.

I hog hunted with my dogs and I know the costs that go into them, but I also know that its MY responsibility to make sure they are taken care of and part of that is keeping them out of situations where they can get hurt by people, ie running on property where they aren't allowed to be. A dog owner can only be mad at themselves if their dog got hurt while on somebody else's property, especially if you know the properties around you are dangerous areas for your dog.

I had a large dog living on my lease last year. He showed up on multiple game cams, running up and down my shooting lanes while on stand, and was frequently seen just laying around the entry gate to the lease.

Frustrating.

I'm confused that so many of you don't know what to do. There is only one thing to do in this situation...SSS.

Being a country boy all my life and having my share of dogs on the farm. It was understood that if your dogs were chasing the neighbors cows or killing their chickens that you would more than likely be missing a dog by the end of the day. Same thing here just be sure and shoot to kill not wound. Nothing worse than spot coming back home dragging a leg behind and the owner having to finish him off. Something else to consider is if the dog belongs to the owner of your lease. Could get a bit messy. My 2cents

Those herd dogs are nothing more than livestock to a deer.. they get use to them and know they arnt a threat... big difference in leasing a place and the LOs dog shows up that's not a good idea either way

We're lucky so far with the dog not running on our lease in Cross Timbers area. However, I've hunted for years up in SE Okla and seen many dogs running deer past my stand. Never entered my mind to shoot a dog doing what comes natural.

I would immediately go to the LO and ask what they want me to do if presented with the situation again. If they will chase deer, they will also likely chase livestock, especially sheep and/or goats, young cattle, etc. Growing up in a small country town, all the LOs around the area had standing orders to shoot any dog seen on their ranches ... this was before the living with the herd type dogs (Pyrenees) of course and more than likely, it was strays or pack mentality from edge of town loose dogs.

Up until last spring I had a literally insane neighbor who lived behind my ranch he had dozens of dogs and he let them roam free and always made threats to shoot anyone who shot his dogs, not that it stopped anyone but every time one didn't come home he would be waiting on the road for me to gripe about it and make more threats about them. I tried telling him to keep them on his place and when one would "dissapear" I would tell him he doesn't know for sure they were shot mabey a fog got em or they died naturally or just ran off, but to no avail he always said no someone shot em, and I was always suspect number one. It was obnoxious of him to let his pack of dogs roam free with no respect towards other property owners. One day he got a dwi and some other insane stuff happened but he went into hiding in his place and quit feeding all the animals he opened his fate and let his donkeys out on to us and no one heard from him again. Slowly but surely the dogs died off most of them had already starved to death before anybody realized something was wrong. Any way about 10 months went by and my cousin and I decided to go check on him and found his body he was dead in his bed the sheriffs dept said he had been dead for 3-4 months so that's why he quit feeding his animals. All I can say is good riddance to white trash and hopefully in a year or two we will start seeing the effects of the lack of chaos him and his dogs caused over the last twenty years. That place should have been 10x better hunting than it is/was now it can start to reach its true potential and I can finally enjoy the place without packs of wild dogs, constant tresspassing, and being shot at by a crazy drunk.

For a time there was a pack of 5 periodically roaming this area, and my place. The pack is now down to one dog. I guess somebody has thinned them out . What a shame.
