It occurred to me that nobody ever mentions an AI 6.5 Swede. Seems to me it would be a good candidate for that. I didn't play with the math, but I'm guessing that it would be a bit faster than the 260 AI, though not as hot as the 6.5-284 but easier on barrels. Any of you guys got one? If so, what'll it do?

No experience with the AI, but the original is plenty effective. I love my sporterized Mauser. Just bought a Ruger 77... can't wait to see what it will do at modern pressures!!!

Kirk, proper assessment, guys on 6mmBR dot com have used them, various versions.
Bottom line, yes better bore life, performance very close to a 6.5/284, and actually accuracy loads in each are about the same mv. Max speed in a 284 seems less than ideal for top accuracy from reports.

That thought occurred to me when I was leafing through the Lyman 49th. I have that great Tikka in 260 and do just fine with the 100 gr Nosler BT's, but I am pretty darn sure that the 120 is more effective on big pigs and deer. That's an opinion obtained through actual experience. I'd go back to the 120's if I could get them a bit closer to 3000 fps. Of course it isn't THAT important, but it would be nice. And, I could go to the 6.5-06 or the 6.5-284 if it really mattered.
I never hear anyone talk about a 6.5x55 AI. Hmmm. Why not? Should be an improvement over the standard version.

I built one a few months ago, but haven't finished modifying and bedding my stock, so I don't have any reloading data of my own, yet. Here is data provided by Bob Jourdan. I have been told that case capacity is roughly equivalent to 6.5-.284, and that you can start light and try working up to it.

Kirk, You should be able to hit very close to or at 2900 in your 20" T3. WW 7/08 brass holds about 1.5gr more than RP, not sure about Lapua and Nosler. I'd not sweat the speed, consider: Bob Swagger, took a FINE whitetail at 483 yds using his 16.5" 6.5x47 Lapua, and 136gr. I know his 130 load hit right at 2700. If you have a ballistic reticle or Turret, you should be good to about as far as you can hit 120, 130, 140, they all kill, just like your 100

Well, 6.5BR, you are right about the bullet speed not making that much difference. My prior 260, the Ruger Compact, was used on pigs and coyotes out to 400 yards with that 120 gr BT from a 16.5 inch barrel. I really just went to the 100 gr bullet for varmint hunting (pigs and coyotes) and just stayed with it for deer. And the central Texas deer are not at all big. So the bullet works fine, and I have a lot of them, so I'll use them up before I go back to the 120's.
All that said, I still sort of wanted 3000 fps with that 120 grainer someday. I didn't thInk that the 260 AI would get me there with that 20 inch barrel, and I had no desire for 6.5-284, but why not the SwedeAI? That might do it, and the base cartridge has a history of being very accurate. But, as I mentioned, nobody talks about the 6.5x55 AI. Lots of recent chatter about the very accurate but somewhat anemic 6.5x47 and the 6.5 Creedmore though, and also that 6.5-284. And I can't go with the 6.5-06 because my cousin and good friend built one of those and I made fun of it. Copying him now would cause him to happily give me major grief. I'd never hear the end of it.
I'll just stay with the 260 for now. It works fine and shoots terrific. But if I outlive the present barrel on that Tikka, I just might go to the Swede AI.

264 Winchester Mangler in a 26" barrel from Winchester is listed on the Spec sheet as being in production, last I looked. Dunno if'n it's just in a tradtional Blue Wood Sporter, or available in an Exreme Weather SS with B&C Medallion under it....or mebbe a bit cheaper Ultimate Shadow SS/syn in tupperware too. 264WMg is basically just 6.5 boolit in a 7RMg case...with lots of snap to it in factory brass, with approx a 100+fps over the 6.5'06. Need of a 26 inch barrel to obtain the velocities touted for the 264 Win Mag and so many were made with 24 inch barels that didn't live up to the hype. Then the 7mm Rem Mag came along and for many the 264 went away or started gathering dust.

Jup, that and the knock on 'em of being barrel burners with the powder of the day.
Whats not so funny looking back at those days when Winchester was KING of the gun world, is that I used to hear from the really Old Timers connected with Winchester that there had been a serious discusion at one time about using a 7mm becasue of the good performance in the field by the 7x57's - WMD Bell aka Karamojo Bell of elephant fame & JO'C's wife also using a 7x57.... instead of a 6.5 like the Swede that was flooding trhe country with mil surp rifles of several origins - I had one too, as Winchester was winding up the intro's of the Belted Magnums and needed a mid range caliber to round out the Magnum herd of 458/338 & 300's that really were head and shoulders over the 300H&H and the rest of the H&H crowd...and Remmy beat them to it and brought out the new Model 700's with chrome lined barrels in the Big 7's at about the same time as I recall....touted the 7RMg as a world beater cartridge that leaped small buildings and ran raging locomotives up a gravel road yadda yadda & whoop Daga boys too (bachelor male Cape Buffalo's) LOLOL. Winchester never recovered either especially with the disaster of dropping the pricey Pre '64's for a much cheaper to build and sell decent shooting but really *&^$ing ugly Push Feed with Pressed checkering. Snooze Ya Looze kinda deal...and why my 1st dozen store bought non milsurp Americanized rifles were all Ruger 77 tang'ers, oil finished wood & cut checkering, decent blueing & polish and came with Free Rings !! at 10-15% cheaper prices to get away from all the RKW Gloss Plastic finish's on Remmy's, and the cheap S*&^ pressed checkering on the Push Feed Winchesters. Not a good time in history for quality US made production guns. Sometime look at the Serial # volume curve from Start Up to about 10 years later in Ruger 77's...that will give an indea of the volume that pretty much had belonged to Winchester in pre '64's... Ron

The 55AI will get you there - even non AI.
It's likely near ideal capacity, etc for a 6.5 IMHO

Just looked the Winchester Home Page, and the 264WMg's come with a 9 twist 26" barrel in Blue/Wood Sporters & Fwts @ $979 and 26" barrels in the Extreme Weather, with the B&C stock @ $1299 for MSRP's.
Me myself'd want one in a Sporter, so's it'd look as old styled as I look...and the 26" barrel on a FWT looks silly to me, 'specially in a Long Action.
MRC also makes 'em, but in 24" barrels in a 9 twist at about the same dollar in Blue/Wood - actually a Boyd's Prarie Hunter all dressed up, and wearing the same B&C stock in SS for about $1200 as I recall....and I've not found a source that discounts MRC's for more than mebbe $100 bux from List. 24" barrels in 264WMg's turn me off though.
OTOH Ya got a choice of 260 & 6.5x284 at those same prices and selections. Might wanta check those out. Ron

Someone on Gunbroker has a limited run (of only 50) Browning X-Bolts in 6.5x55. Around $800 shipped, if anyone is interested. Not sure on twist, but I would have been interested had I not just picked up that Ruger.
