Wanting to get a 300 whisper or 300 blackout barrel for my encore. I don't see any diffrence in the two except, the blackout seems more popular so ammo may be easier to find. What preference do the experts here have?

If you get a barrel chambered in 300 whisper, it can not fire the 300 blk out, since the blk out is a longer round. But a 300 blk out can fire either.

So there basically the same other than that? I should just go with the blackout then, right?

The Smith & Wesson M&P15 300 Whisper is the only 300 Whisper I have seen that is advertised to shoot 300 Blackout.

So if you wanted to get a close range deer rifle for the kids would you get a whisper or the blackout?

I would get the blackout since it will take either.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

If a S&W 300 whisper can chamber the 300 Blackout, why can't other rifles do the same? Not trying to hijack post, but I'm confused.

300 whisper is a wildcat round invented/patented by J.D. jones of SSK Industries, AAC just tweaked it enough to meet SAMMI specs and "invented" the Blackout. For a barrel to say 300 Whisper they must have SSK authorization, atleast that it what I am led to believe. That's a shortened version of a long story that I'm also sure I'll be corrected on.
Side note my buddy has the 338 whisper, fires a 300gr 338 Sierra HPBT quieter than a pellet gun, it's awesome.
HHUUMMMM, what to write, what to write, I got nothing.

So if you wanted to get a close range deer rifle for the kids would you get a whisper or the blackout? Get the Blackout, it will shoot either of them. I have a 16" and an 8" SBR, both in 300 blackout. I shoot blackout ammo and Hornady Whisper ammo out of both.

If a S&W 300 whisper can chamber the 300 Blackout, why can't other rifles do the same? Not trying to hijack post, but I'm confused. The Whisper was made from a .221 case, and blackout is from a 5.56 case. Different throat sizes, specs are close, but use different reamers. Apparently the shorter, tighter throat in the Blackout case increases pressure when shot in a Whisper chamber and could exceed SAAMI max pressures. I'm no pro and that info is just a choke and puke from when I was looking up stuff before buying my blackout.

It has to do with the overall length and SAAMI spec. The blk out chamber has a longer throat than the Whisper. So, the blk out bullets are seated out longer for increased powder capacity. This increased powder capacity allows increased pressure and proper cycling in an AR platform, which it was designed for. The 300 Whisper does not have a SAAMI spec, which means that it is "technically" a wildcat still, with varying case dimensions and chamberings. The 300 blk out has a SAAMI spec, meaning exact case drawings and chambering size on file. If you set a fired case of each next to each other, you can not tell them apart. They have the same case dimensions. But it's the overall length of the bullet that is the difference.

Hornady has done 2 things. They want to sell their 300 Whisper ammo, so they chamber it in Whisper/blk out. If they increase the throat by .015", it can do both. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

Also, there are 2 main reamers used in the 300 blk out. The SAAMI reamer, which is the larger reamer. And the Wilson/Noveske "match" reamer which is .006" smaller than the SAAMI reamer. Why is this important?
The SAAMI reamer is based on MAXIMUM case dimensions. It is a large chamber and allows any cases or ammo to fit inside.
The Noveske/Wilson match reamer is a MINIMUM spec reamer. Meaning that it is based on the smallest (minimum) case dimensions of the blk out. It has a neck that is smaller, and it has the shoulder bumped back .006" shorter than max. The difference between min and max on the blk out is .006". It may not sound like much, but that's a normal difference between min and max (most rounds are either .006" or .007" between SAAMI min and max). The blk out was based on using cut down 5.56 military brass. This brass is much thicker. To make the blk out brass, you have to cut the case just below the shoulder of the 5.56 case. This is a thick area of the case. The case wall of the 5.56 is now the neck of the blk out round. This makes the necks thicker on the blk out with 5.56 brass, which makes a very tight fit on a minimum chamber. Next is the shoulder. The shoulder is .006" shorter than max. When you seat a bullet in a cut down 5.56 case in the blk out, it swells the case out more in the shoulder area to fit the bullet in (about .003" to .005", depending on the bullet). This swelling or increase in shoulder dimension can easily push your shoulder dimension over the minimum spec, but still be under max SAAMI spec. If the shoulder increases (even .001"), it will not chamber in a minimum spec chamber. This becomes a major issue.
Why you would make a tight/match chamber in an AR platform rifle goes against the grain? The AR is a battle rifle and needs to chamber and extract 100% of the time. By using a minimum spec chamber, you are creating chambering issues if any dirt or debris get into the chamber. If you shoot subsonic ammo suppressed, you will get a lot of powder fouling blowing back into this match chamber, and will start having chambering issues. The blk out round is not a "match" round and will not be used in long range competition, like the 223 Rem is. I truly do not know why you would put a tight, "match" chamber in an AR platform chambered in 300 blk out.

I have my contender chambered for rimmed Blackout - had to be different (300 blackout rebated with a 38/357 rim - I use 357 parent brass). I am happy enough with the MGM barrel. Only issue is crimps - the brass is 0.1 short and the crimp dies hate that.
